When consulting with Jennifer, an organizing client of mine, she said, "I really would like my home to look better. I have clutter in every room. There is a long
list of repairs and cleaning projects that need to be handled. Plus, I'd just like each room to be decorated better."
I asked, "What is holding you back?"
She replied, "I feel like a deer in headlights. I'm so overwhelmed. I know it's going to take forever to make all of this happen."
I suggested that she simply forget about everything that needs to be done; and just focus on one small improvement a day.
I told her to pick a room to focus on. She chose the kitchen.
I then told her to clear off the kitchen table. She was able to do this in exactly 4 minutes.
Yesterday she
didn't have a clear kitchen table. Today she does. And that's big.
I then gave her 7 index cards and had her write down simple tasks she could do during the week ahead in her kitchen...one
task per card.
1. Declutter 10 items
2. Add some WD-40 to the squeaky cabinet doors 3. Wipe the kitchen counter
4. Add the dirty dishes in the sink to the dishwasher
5. Add her bread machine to the garage sale area
6. Get rid of her surplus of storage containers
7. Get rid of the expired/spoiled food in her fridge
She said, "I can do these!" I said, "Yes, I know you can." One small improvement daily leads to better tomorrows.
What improvement will you make
today?
