Organizing Thought of the Day

Build an Organized Life
|
There are quite a few new homes being constructed not far from my house. It's
fun, when my husband and I are out walking, to watch the construction progress,
and when complete, seeing new families moving into wonderfully empty homes
with absolutely no clutter.
But now and then, I witness a new family pulling up to their new home, along
with hundreds of boxes of stuff from their old residence. Five to six months to
build one of these beautiful homes, and only a day or two for some families to
fill every room with clutter.
Speaking of clutter, my husband and I took a walk in our development the other
day. Since it was nice outside, many people had their garages open. There were
a number of garages that were stuffed so tightly, floor to ceiling, wall to
wall--and these are 2-3 car garages. Most of the residents with the cluttered
garages had to park their vehicles in the driveway because all of the clutter
in the garage prevented parking the cars inside.
Based on these observations, I have a few organizing tips that I'd like to
share today:
1. Don't move your clutter with you. If you're planning a move in the
near future, leave your clutter behind. Seriously sort through the things you
have and lighten your load.
2. Declutter daily. Whether you're planning a move or not, every day is
a good day to ensure that every item taking up space in your home is something
you love, something you use, and something you have space for. Declutter daily
to keep the clutter at bay.
3. If you can't fit your cars in the garage, it's high time to declutter.
Don't think of your garage as a storage facility. Sure, you can certainly
store stuff in the garage, but that storage space should be 'in addition to'
your vehicles, 'not in place of them.'
4. Avoid overwhelm. If you have a house or garage that is filled with
clutter, it's easy to get overwhelmed and not to begin tackling this project.
Try not to think of EVERYTHING that needs to be done. Instead, choose one
section and one shelf, one box, or one pile. Focus on that only today...and
then repeat tomorrow. As long as you don't ADD anything, little by little,
you'll begin to see progress in your efforts!

clutter challenges soon turn into large clutter issues.
Plus, clutter is sneaky...it doesn't only show up in the pile of shoes you may

the basement, or the stuffed-to-the-max drawers and closets in your home.
Clutter can actually invade your life in FOUR forms...
1. Physical Clutter
2. Paper Clutter
