When most folks are thinking about moving to a new home, one of the first things they begin doing is touring homes they may be interested in.
Today, imagine that you're thinking of moving to a new home...and that home is YOUR home.
Is it in good order and presentable?
Or will you be touring rooms that are filled with clutter or that have stuffed closets?
Do you have a messy kitchen, a home
office with a desk piled high with paper, spare rooms that are packed with boxes, and/or a bathroom that is in need of cleaning and tidying?
Touring our homes, as if we were buying them
TODAY, can give us a good sense of how we'd like our home to be presented...to ourselves and to anyone who comes to visit.
Grab a clipboard, paper, and a pen. Walk into each room and give
it a good look-over. What would you change?
Perhaps you'd tidy up a book shelf that hasn't been reorganized in awhile.
Maybe you'd clear off the surface of an end table or a desk.
You might say to yourself, "This room has too much bulky furniture in it. I may donate that large chair. Nobody sits on it anyway."
Perhaps you'll think, "the kitchen would look so much better if the dishes were washed and put away."
You might
glance at one of the windows and immediately say to yourself, "Hmmmm...that looks pretty dirty. It really needs to be washed."
Perhaps you'll look in your closet and come to the conclusion
that you have way too many items of clothing (or shoes) that you never wear.
Inspect every room. Write down ALL of your thoughts...one sheet of paper per room.
When you're done touring your home, you should have a list of tasks to tackle. But don't get overwhelmed.
Once you know what you want to do, you can then choose ONE of those tasks a day (don't worry about any of the others for now), zone in on that task only, and tackle it. Cross each task off as you handle it.
Touring your home now and then, with a clipboard, paper, and pen in hand, is an excellent, mindful way to declutter and organize.
