Have you ever wondered if you need a new hairstylist?
Or maybe your current stylist is moving or changing careers, and you suddenly don’t know where your next haircut is coming from.
Ginny, a friend of mine, recently found herself in a hair rut. It seemed like her hair always looked the same, with only slight variations in length. She had been going
to the same stylist for a long time. For as long as I know Ginny, about 12 years now, Ginny's hair style had not changed.
Ginny was considering a new style and spoke to her hairdresser about it. She expressed her desire
for something different, like adding some layers or maybe adding a curtain bang. Her stylist tried to accommodate her, but the past few appointments ended up in Ginny being disappointed. Ginny felt that, despite the changes her hair stylist made, her hair didn't look much different than it had before.
Ginny began to wonder if it was time to switch hair stylists. But, she agonized over this decision. Having been with the same stylist for so long, the thought of finding someone new felt like an actual breakup.
She also worried about what would happen if she went to
someone else and ended up with a disastrous haircut. Could she go back to her previous stylist? What would she even say?
Ginny discussed her concerns with one friend who suggested, that if she had to go back to her current stylist, to tell a little white lie and say she got her hair cut on a whim while
out of town. It wasn't a bad suggestion, although Ginny was never good at lying.
Ginny called me and told me about this struggle she was having. My advice was that if she wanted to get a new style or haircut using a different stylist, then by all means she should do it.
She didn't have to give an explanation to her old stylist. If she wanted to use that stylist again in the future, she could just make an appointment. If the old stylist then asked why she left, she could just tell the truth: that she wanted to embark on some new hair styling adventures.
Most professional hair stylists understand that they can't be the perfect hair stylist for every single person. They also know that people leave and either sometimes return or don't. It's the nature of the business.
With some apprehension, Ginny made an appointment with a new stylist. And it turned out to be the right thing to do.
From the moment she met the new stylist, she felt a connection. The stylist genuinely
listened to Ginny's desires for a different look, and she agreed that layers would look great. They discussed the ideal length, how Ginny liked to style her hair, and even the tools she used. Ginny was happy and felt like a new person!
Ginny considers herself fortunate that the first new stylist she
tried turned out to be the right one. Of course, she acknowledges that it could have gone the other way.
Nevertheless, Ginny learned that taking that initial step of making an appointment was the hardest part. If it hadn't gone well, she could have tried another stylist. There are plenty of
talented hairstylists out there, and though it may take some time and effort, it's worth it to find the right one for you.
I also have a thought for you that you might take to heart and try. I have three different hair stylists that I go to. Why?
Because if one of those hair stylists is ill when I want my hair done, or leaves the salon and moves far away, or if one of them is more convenient for me to get to that week, I have options.
I'm also never in an, "Oh no...I want my hair done for an unexpected event this week and my stylist is on vacation" situation.
Plus, all of my stylists are well aware that I use the services of other stylists. So they don't expect me every 5 or 6 weeks, but rather
less frequently.
In the end, what matters most is finding a hairstylist who understands and fulfills your hair needs and desires. Ginny's experience taught her the importance of taking that leap and exploring new possibilities. Just like having multiple hairstylists, it's always wise to keep your options
open.
By being open to trying different stylists and embracing change, you'll increase your chances of finding the perfect match. So don't hesitate to embark a new hair stylist
adventure!
