Just recently, a beautiful town square was built
where I live, right next to our also-new local library. Among many other amenities, there is a water feature at the square that the kids in town just love. Essentially, they press a button and water pumps up into the air. There were kids running through the water in their bathing suits the other day. They were laughing and so joyful. It really made my day as I watched them for a few moments before entering the library.
These few moments also reminded me that it's nearly "official summer" and many of us will be putting on our bathing suits and heading to the beach, the pool, or maybe just our backyards to relax on a lounge chair.
As you likely are more than aware of, quality bathing suits are not cheap.
Whoever thought that something with so little material could potentially cost so much money. This is why it's important to treat our bathing suits with respect. Caring for them properly ensures their longevity. Here's what I do to keep my favorite swimsuits in top-notch condition. 1. Rinse
after Every Use: After taking a dip, I always rinse out my swimsuit with cool water at the facility (gym, local pool, beach, etc.) once I'm dressed. This simple step removes chlorine, saltwater, sand, and other residues that could damage the fabric over time. Gentle rinsing also helps to prevent discoloration, fading, and odors from setting in.
By the way, always bring a waterproof bag with you so you can put your swimsuit in it after you're done wearing it. This way, the wet suit doesn't soak your tote bag or anything else in that bag. When you get home, it's then time to wash it properly.
2. Hand Wash: To keep my swimsuit looking its best, I don't toss it in the washing machine. I opt to hand wash. To do so, I fill a basin with cool water and add a mild
detergent. I then gently swirl the swimsuit in the water for a few minutes, paying attention to areas that may have been compromised with tanning lotion. I avoid scrubbing vigorously or using harsh chemicals, as doing so can weaken the fibers. 3. Skip the Dryer: I never put my swimsuit in the dryer. Resist the temptation to do so. The high heat can cause the fabric to shrink or lose its shape. Instead, lay your swimsuit flat on a clean towel or hang it in the shade to air dry. Avoid direct sunlight, as it may lead to fading or color distortion.
4. Beware of Rough Surfaces: I always watch what I'm sitting on to avoid swimsuit snags. Whether you're sitting poolside, lounging on the beach, or even relaxing in your own back yard, be cautious of rough surfaces that can snag or tear your swimsuit. Always sit on a towel or beach chair to protect your swimwear from potential damage.
5. Rotate Your Swimsuits: I always own at least two swimsuits I love at any given time so I can rotate wearing them. Constant use of a single swimsuit can lead to faster deterioration. Plus, by alternating between swimsuits, you allow each to rest, recover, and maintain their elasticity.
