As the echoes of Jingle Bells fade away, and the last remnants of tinsel find their
way into storage boxes, there's a quaint and often overlooked celebration waiting to unfold—Little Christmas.
Today is Little Christmas, also known as the Feast of the Epiphany. It marks the culmination of the Twelve Days of Christmas.
Little Christmas holds historical and religious significance, symbolizing the arrival of the Three Wise Men who visited the newborn Jesus. It's a day to reflect on the journey they undertook, following the guiding star.
Beyond its religious context, Little Christmas gives everyone a chance to relish the holiday season just a little while longer.
Here are a few organized ways to celebrate...
1. Symbolic Gifts: In the spirit of the Three Wise Men bringing gifts, consider exchanging small, symbolic gifts that embody the spirit of the season and the beginning of the year. Some examples are a small book of quotes or passages
you compiled or a handwritten poem.
2. King's Cake: This is a sweet treat that you may be able to buy at a local bakery...or bake yourself. Often hidden inside are small trinkets. One is usually a tiny baby Jesus and whoever finds it is crowned "king" or "queen" for the day.
Honestly, I've never been a huge fan of this because a) putting trinkets in cake can pose a choking hazard and b) I always thought it was a bit strange to stuff plastic baby Jesus trinkets in a cake.
If you like doing this, please be careful especially if you have young kids.
Alternately, skip putting trinkets in the cake and
tuck them in tiny boxes instead. Mix the boxes up. Then, have each person choose a box. The person who finds the baby Jesus can then be the lucky winner.
3. Candlelit Dinner: Arrange a cozy candlelit dinner to commemorate the end of the Christmas season. It can be a simple affair with close family or friends...and it
can be as easy as spaghetti or breakfast for dinner.
4. Charitable Acts: Extend the spirit of giving by engaging in charitable acts. Donate to a local charity or simply spread kindness by performing one or more random acts of goodwill. Little Christmas is an excellent opportunity to be kind and
generous.
On this 12th day of Christmas, you're invited to savor the lingering magic of the season and join me in extending the joy and warmth of the holidays.
