If you've been on my newsletter for awhile, you know I'm all about preparation...and as early as possible.
This time of year, if you haven't done so already, it's essential to get your home ready for the colder months ahead...especially if you live in a cold weather state.
Before the first snowfall blankets your surroundings, taking the time to prepare your home can save you time, energy, and money from potential issues.
Where I live in Wisconsin, that snowfall could happen as early as November, although I'm hoping it will hold off a bit.
At any rate, here are five crucial household tasks to tackle before the snow begins to fall.
1. Gutter Maintenance: One often overlooked but
crucial task before winter is cleaning and inspecting your gutters. Fallen leaves, twigs, and other debris can accumulate in your gutters, causing blockages.
When snow and ice build
up in clogged gutters, it can lead to ice dams and water damage to your roof and walls. Take the time to clear out your gutters (or hire someone to do it for you), ensuring proper water drainage and preventing potential winter-related problems.
2. Weatherproofing Windows and
Doors: Drafts from poorly sealed windows and doors can significantly impact your home's energy efficiency during the winter. Before the snow arrives, inspect the seals around windows and doors for any gaps or cracks.
Apply weatherstripping or caulking to seal these openings and keep the cold
air outside. This not only helps maintain a warmer indoor environment but also reduces energy costs. 3. Furnace and Heating System Check: Ensure that your home's heating system is in optimal condition before the winter chill sets in. Schedule a professional inspection and
maintenance for your furnace or heating system.
Clean or replace air filters, check for any leaks, and ensure that the thermostat is working correctly. A well-maintained heating system not
only keeps your home warm but also operates more efficiently, saving you money on energy bills.
4. Chimney Inspection and Fireplace Preparation: If you have a fireplace, a cozy fire can be a delightful way to combat the winter cold. However, before lighting that first fire, it's
crucial to inspect and clean your chimney. Creosote buildup in chimneys can pose a fire hazard.
Consider hiring a professional chimney sweep to remove any debris and ensure that the chimney
is safe for use. Additionally, stock up on firewood and ensure it's stored in a dry place to avoid any issues when you're ready to light a fire.
If you have a gas fireplace, those need to
be serviced annually too. Just an FYI.
5. Outdoor Equipment Storage: Before the snow arrives, properly store outdoor equipment and furniture to protect it from the harsh winter conditions.
Clean and store your lawnmower, trimmers, and other gardening tools.
Drain any fuel from outdoor power equipment to prevent damage.
Also, consider covering or storing patio furniture to extend its lifespan. Properly preparing your outdoor spaces for winter ensures that everything will be in good
condition when spring arrives. Taking the time to complete these five household tasks before the first snowfall can save you from potential headaches and expenses during the winter season. By addressing these, you'll be well-prepared to face the challenges of winter, keeping your home warm, safe,
and comfortable.
