Hi Linda,
I understand how important and sentimental family photos can be. Here are some suggestions on what you can do with your collection:
1. Organize and Sort: Start by sorting the photos into categories such as school photos, family photos, vacations, special occasions, holiday photos, and individual or group shots.
I would not do anything else except
sort into categories initially. This way, you can further sub-categorize if certain piles start getting large. Alternately, you can combine categories that aren't so big.
Once all of your photos are sorted (and this may take time so be patient with
yourself), you'll then be better able to place these categories of photos into albums or photo boxes.
2. Digitize Your Photos: Consider digitizing your photos to ensure their longevity. You can use a scanner or a photo scanning service
to convert them into digital format. This not only helps in preserving the images but also allows you to easily share them with family members.
3. Create Photo Albums: Choose albums with acid-free pages and archival quality to ensure the longevity of the prints. Label the back of each photo with names, dates, and
locations (or use your album's journaling lines if available) to provide context for future generations.
4. Frame Your Favorites: Select some of your favorite photos and frame them for display in your home. You can then enjoy these memories every day. Consider creating a photo wall with a mix of framed pictures
to showcase your family's history.
5. Share with Family Members: Years ago, when my parents were moving from their home to a small apartment, they gave me their wedding album and several other photo albums. I treasure having this album. So, if you don't have the space, consider passing some family photos on to other
family members who may want them...and who do have the space for them.
Also, distribute any duplicates of photos to other family members. This spreads the joy and helps to keep the volume of your collection at bay.
6. Consider a Family History Project: If you have the time and resources, embark on a family history project. Create a comprehensive record of your family's past, incorporating photos, documents, and personal narratives.
Take it one step at a time and enjoy the process of reliving the beautiful moments captured in those treasured family photos.
Best regards,
