The other day I found a recipe that I spontaneously decided I wanted to make that night. One
of the ingredients was buttermilk. I didn't have buttermilk on hand, but I did have plain yogurt. I immediately recalled reading in a magazine that it is a good substitute. I gave it a whirl. The result: I didn't have to make a grocery run and the recipe turned out great.
We often think of substitutes when it comes to food prepartion,
but there are numerous opportunities when we might need (and benefit from) a substitution otherwise. Here are five:
1. Coconut Oil as Makeup Remover: Ran out of your favorite eye makeup remover? No worries! Coconut oil serves as an excellent alternative for removing stubborn makeup, especially around the eyes. Simply
apply a small amount of coconut oil to a cotton pad, gently wipe away makeup, and thoroughly rinse off.
2. White Vinegar for Fabric Softener: If you're out of fabric softener or looking for a more eco-friendly alternative, white vinegar is your go-to solution. Add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle when
doing laundry to soften fabric and eliminate static cling. Don't worry...your laundry won't smell like vinegar. It's a cost-effective and natural way to keep your clothes feeling soft and fresh.
3. Tea Bags for Soothing Eye Compress: Can't find your eye mask and your eyes are tired and/or puffy? Have no fear. Tea bags
can provide quick relief. Steep two tea bags (green or black tea works well) in hot water, then allow them to cool in the refrigerator. Place the chilled tea bags over your closed eyes for 5-10 minutes to reduce puffiness and soothe tired eyes. It works great due to the anti-inflammatory properties of the tea.
4. Lipstick for
Blush: When you're in a pinch and need a quick blush fix, reach for your favorite lipstick. Choose a shade that complements your skin tone and has a creamy texture. Dab a small amount of lipstick onto your fingertips or a makeup sponge, then lightly pat it onto the apples of your cheeks. Blend it outwards towards your temples for a natural flush of color.
5. Resistance Bands for Weights: When traveling and you don't have access to traditional weights, resistance bands are excellent alternatives that provide a wonderful way for you to maintain your fitness routine on the go. Whether you're in a hotel room or outdoors, these portable options make it easy to stay active and keep your muscles engaged while traveling.
