I really love going to the beach, which is tough when you live in Wisconsin like I do. We do
have lake beaches here, but it's nowhere like being at the ocean. I grew up in New Jersey with my pick of beaches...and I try to get back to the Jersey shore at least once a year. It's my happy place.
The beach promises relaxation, fun, and endless sunshine. But
without proper planning and organization, it's easy for the experience to turn chaotic.
Whether you're a seasoned beachgoer or a newbie, having the right essentials in your beach bag can make all the difference. Here are ten must-haves to ensure your beach day is
as smooth, safe, and enjoyable as the gentle waves rolling onto the shore
1. Sunscreen and Chapstick: Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays should be your top priority, but don't forget about your lips!
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF AND a lip balm with SPF. Reapply both every couple of hours, especially after swimming or sweating. 3. Beach Towel and Beach Mat: A large, absorbent towel (one per person) is a beach essential for drying off after a swim or lounging on the sand.
A beach mat will give you a large surface to lay on and/or to keep all of your gear out of the sand. 4. Snacks: Pack some light snacks to keep hunger at bay between meals. Opt for non-perishable
items like granola bars, nuts, or fruit that won't spoil in the heat. A small cooler bag can help keep perishable snacks fresh. If it's not in a cooler, avoid bringing chocolate to avoid a melted mess.
5. Portable Shade: While basking in the sun is part of the beach experience, it's essential to have some shade to
retreat to when the heat becomes too intense. A beach umbrella or a pop-up sun shelter provides instant relief from the sun's rays.
6. Beach Chair: Sitting directly on the sand can be uncomfortable for extended periods. Bring along a lightweight beach chair (one per person) to create a cozy spot for lounging and relaxing. 7. Waterproof Bag: Keep your valuables safe and dry with a waterproof bag or pouch. Store your phone, keys, wallet, and other essentials in the bag to protect them from water, sand, and sun damage.
I always bring a
plastic bag to stow away wet bathing suits and wet towels after showering...these bags can always be dried out and reused.
8. Hat and Sunglasses: Shield your eyes and face from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses. Not only do they provide much-needed protection, but they also add a stylish
touch to your beach ensemble.
9. Portable Charger: Don't let a dead phone battery ruin your beach day. Bring along a portable charger to keep your devices powered up. Whether you're capturing memories with photos or listening to music, being able to charge your phone from your beach chair will help ensure you stay
connected and entertained.
10. Wet Wipes and Hand Sanitizer: Stay clean and germ-free with wet wipes and hand sanitizer. Use them to wipe away sand, clean your hands before eating, and freshen up throughout the day.
With these ten essentials packed in your beach bag, you'll be well-prepared for a day of sun, sand, and surf.
Don't forget to also bring a change of clothes if you plan to enjoy the boardwalk (if
applicable) or enjoy some shopping or eating out later.
Remember to also respect the beach and its environment by cleaning up after yourself and leaving nothing behind but footprints.
