If your home has a garage, you probably know how quickly you can accumulate stuff like gardening supplies, sports equipment, automobile products, tools, old
paint...pretty much anything we have to keep indoors but don't want to store in the main areas of our home.
In time, it's easy for the garage to resemble more of a cluttered maze than a functional space. I know a good number of people who park in their driveway
because there's no space left in the garage for their vehicles.
First things first: Get rid of anything in there that you no longer need. This is the most important step. You don't want to waste time attempting to organize clutter.
Then, apply good organizing habits like using up what you have before buying more, putting things back where they belong when you're done using them, and getting rid of anything that was once useful but is not useful anymore.
Good organizing strategies help too! These five will help you say goodbye to garage chaos:
1. Get your yard tools
organized: Don't just lean your yard tools against the wall scattered around the garage. This can be messy, your tools can easily get misplaced, and they can fall over as well.
Joe (my husband) and I have a durable, large-capacity yard tool organizer in one corner of our garage that keeps our rakes, gardening shovels, the broom we use for our driveway, our hedge clippers, etc. organized and easily
accessible. 2. Organize power cords: Don't just toss extension cords/power cords in a cabinet or corner. Hang them with extension cord holders. This will keep them neat and tidy...and easy to identify and grab when needed. 3. Get bikes off the garage floor: If your family enjoys
riding bicycles, you may have two, three, or more bikes in your garage on the floor. One way to save space is to get them mounted on the wall. To do so, choose a sturdy bike wall mount that swivels. Be sure the bikes get stored on those mounts when not in use. 4. Get items sorted on a sturdy shelf: Near every garage can benefit from a sturdy metal shelving unit. I always recommend one that will bear a whole lot of weight so you can add what you need without the unit wobbling or warping.
Use storage bins to keep like-items together and be sure to
label those bins on the front side so you can see those identifiers when the bin is on your shelving unit. 5. Mason Jar Screw Holder: Keep your screws and other small hardware items organized and visible with this mason jar hack. Attach the lids of mason jars to the underside of a shelf or cabinet using screws. Then
fill the jars with hardware (screws, nuts, nails, etc.) You'll always be able to see what you have and have the ability to grab what you need with ease.
Invest a few minutes a day transforming your garage into a clutter-free zone that you'll be proud to show off. And if your car is parked in your driveway, hopefully, you'll soon have
enough space in your garage again to park it inside.
