Most people only wear 20% of the clothes in their closets. There are always those few
favorite outfits people rotate through while the rest of their clothes hang there, neglected and forgotten.
This summer, why not take on a fun and productive project? Shop your closet!
Shopping your closet is about rediscovering what you already own and giving those forgotten pieces a new lease on life. Not only will this help you create fresh outfits without spending a dime, but it will also streamline your wardrobe, making it easier to find what you love to wear.
Step 1: Take Inventory
Start by taking everything out of your closet. Yes, everything! Lay it all out on your bed or a clean surface so you can see exactly what you have. This step alone can be eye-opening. You might find clothes you forgot you owned or realize just how many similar items you have.
Step 2: Sort and Organize
Once you’ve taken inventory, sort your clothes into categories like tops, bottoms, dresses, and jackets. This will help you see how many pieces you have in each category and make it easier to start putting outfits together.
Step 3: Get Creative with Outfits
Now comes the fun part: challenge yourself to create outfits using the clothes you already have. Mix and match pieces you wouldn’t normally pair together. Try layering items in new ways or accessorizing them
differently.
As you piece together each outfit, take a photo of it. Then put the clothing items that make up that outfit back in your closet.
Step 4: Evaluate Each Piece
As you are doing this, evaluate each piece of clothing. Does it fit well? Is it still in good condition? Do you feel good wearing it? If a piece doesn’t make the cut, set it aside.
Step 5: Make the Call
After several attempts at incorporating certain items into outfits, you might find some pieces just don’t work for you anymore. That’s okay! If you’ve tried and still can’t make them work, it’s time to let them go. Place these items in a donation box and give them to a charitable
organization. Not only will you be decluttering your space, but you’ll also be giving someone else the opportunity to enjoy them.
Step 6: Maintain Your Newly Organized Closet
With your closet now streamlined and organized, make an effort
to maintain it. Regularly assess your wardrobe, especially at the change of seasons, and repeat the process as needed.
Shopping your closet can be a rewarding and eye-opening project. You’ll discover new outfits, feel more organized, and perhaps even develop a better sense of your style.
So, take some time this summer to shop your closet. Who knows, you might find some new favorite outfits without spending a penny! Remember, the goal is to have clothes in your closet that make you feel good, look great, and serve your lifestyle.
