Decluttering has always been a way for me to find calm and clarity. A few months ago, in the
weeks leading up to my daughter’s return to college—my home office became storage central for all the things she’d be taking with her.
For about three weeks, every time I stepped into that room, I felt overwhelmed. It was as though the clutter had completely taken
over, and I couldn’t focus. Once we moved her into her campus apartment and the space was finally clear, I immediately felt lighter, like I could breathe again.
Removing items from a space can be therapeutic.
Here’s how you can turn your own decluttering into a therapeutic experience:
1. Set an Intention: Begin with a goal in mind. Are you looking for more peace, better focus, or just more space? Setting an intention helps you stay motivated and
gives the process deeper meaning.
2. Start Small: It’s easy to get overwhelmed by a big project. Focus on one small area, like a drawer or a shelf. Tackling bite-sized tasks creates a sense of accomplishment and keeps you from feeling too stressed.
3. Create a Calm Atmosphere: To make decluttering more enjoyable, create a calming environment. Light a scented candle, turn on relaxing music, or open the windows for fresh air. A peaceful atmosphere makes the task feel more like self-care than a chore.
4. Let Go Without Guilt: It’s okay to let go of things that no longer serve you. Whether it’s clothes that don’t fit or items you’re holding onto for sentimental reasons, releasing them makes space for something new and refreshing in your life.
5. Celebrate Your
Progress: Once you're done, take a moment to appreciate your hard work. Whether it's enjoying a cup of tea or simply admiring your newly clear space, celebrating your progress helps reinforce the positive benefits of decluttering.
Turning decluttering into a mindful practice can help you not only clear your space but also ease
your mind, just like it did for me.
