GON Reader Question
Dear Maria,
I hope you can help me. My computer desktop is a mess. It's filled with tons of icons and I can't find anything when I need it. Every time I look at it, I feel overwhelmed and end up not doing anything about it. I need a better system. What should I do?

Maria's Response
Hi Mitchell,
It can definitely feel overwhelming when all those icons seem to be staring back at you. Here are some thoughts:
Create a Favorites Folder
Start by identifying the items you use most often – like your web browser, a document folder, or maybe a specific app. You want to keep these handy, but let’s not leave them lost in a sea of icons.
I suggest creating a “Favorites” folder right on your desktop. Drag those most-used items into this folder, and you’ll instantly have less visual clutter.
Make Folders for Major Categories
Next, deal with the rest of those icons. You can sort them into categories, just like how you might sort through physical paperwork at home. Create folders for categories like “Work,” “Photos,” “Projects,” or whatever makes sense for you.
Once you start dragging those icons into their new homes, your desktop will start feeling less chaotic and more organized.
Delete What You Don't Need
Don’t forget about deleting what you no longer need. If there an icon sitting on your desktop that you haven’t opened in months (or maybe even years), it’s time to say goodbye. Just like decluttering a drawer...out it goes!
Give it a Final Touch
Once your desktop is clear, consider changing your background to something calming, like a peaceful landscape or a favorite photo. It’s like the finishing touch after
cleaning up a room, and it will make you feel even better when you open up your computer.
Tackling your desktop one small step at a time will make a big difference. Once it’s clean, keep it organized by doing a little maintenance each week.
I hope this helps. Keep me posted on this project and your progress!
