I’m not a fan of winter. By the time February rolls around, I’ve had enough of the cold, the
gray skies, and bundling up in layers just to grab the mail.
But spring? That’s a different story. The fresh air, the longer days, the first signs of green—yes, please!
Since spring doesn’t officially arrive until mid-March, I like to use this time to get a few things organized so that when those warmer days finally show up, I can enjoy them right away.
Here are 9 things I’m tackling now that you might want to get a jump on too.
1. Your Garden Tools and SuppliesI’m not stepping outside to dig in the dirt just yet, but I can make sure my tools are ready to go.
I’ll check my pruners, gloves, and trowels, toss anything broken, and see if I need to replace anything. That way, the second it’s warm enough, I can get outside
without any time wasted. 2. Outdoor Furniture (For Now, Just Plan It Out)It's way too cold in many places to be scrubbing down patio furniture, but I’m making a plan. Do I need new cushions? Should I freshen up the setup? I might even
order a new outdoor welcome mat now. 3. The Entryway
Before spring arrives, I’ll go through everything, store what we won’t need, and set up a spot for the incoming mud and puddles that spring inevitably brings.
4. Sports and
Outdoor GearI’m not pulling out the bikes yet, but I will make sure everything is in working order. That means checking the air in the tires, seeing if our hiking boots need new laces, and making sure all the outdoor gear is easy to grab when adventure calls. 5. Seasonal Clothing
I am
so ready to swap out heavy sweaters for lighter jackets and sneakers. While I won’t be packing away winter clothes just yet, I will go through my spring wardrobe and see what I still love, what needs replacing, and what can be donated. No more last-minute “I have nothing to wear” panic when it’s finally warm enough for short sleeves.
6. Windows and Blinds (At Least the Inside!)
Sunshine makes everything feel better—except when it highlights dusty blinds and streaky windows. I’ll wipe down the inside now and save the outdoor washing for when it’s actually bearable to be outside.
7. Garage or Shed (Small Steps for Now)
Organizing the garage or shed in freezing temps? No, thank you. But I can do the inside prep work—sorting through small tools, tossing broken items, and making a list of what I’ll tackle when it warms up. Future me will be so grateful.
8. Your Cleaning Supplies
Spring cleaning is easier when everything is stocked and ready. I’ll take a few minutes to go through my supplies, get rid of anything I don’t use, and restock essentials. No one wants to start a big cleaning session only to realize they’re out of glass cleaner.
9. Your Calendar
Spring can get busy fast—school events, vacations, yard work, and everything in between. I’ll take a few minutes now to block off time for things I want to do (like a weekend getaway or a local event) before my schedule fills up with
obligations.
Not everything on this list can be done right now—some things will have to wait for warmer weather—but making even a little progress now means a smoother transition into spring. And that? Well, that makes these last cold weeks just a little easier to bear.
P.S. So many of my GON Readers sent messages to me when our beloved family pet, Buddy the bunny, was ill back in October. Sadly, Buddy crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday. We are heartbroken. He was 11 years old and an absolute joy to our family...especially our daughter, Amanda. Thank you for all of
your prayers and kindness. It is appreciated more than you know.
