Organization is Self-Care

There’s something about a clear countertop that feels like a deep breath. A drawer that isn’t jammed full of odds and ends, but instead opens smoothly to reveal just what you need, neatly in its place.

I was working with a client who longed for that sense of calm. She felt overwhelmed by the constant clutter in her home, unsure of where to start or how to maintain order once she found it.

For years, she thought a little mess was harmless, even charming. The stray mail pile, the extra coffee mugs, the closet crammed with ‘just in case’ jackets. But what she didn’t realize was the undercurrent of stress it brought with it.

Every time she passed that mail pile, it whispered, “Deal with me.” Every overstuffed drawer groaned, not just with stuff, but with mental weight.

When we began organizing—truly committing to it—she felt a shift. It wasn’t just about putting things in pretty bins or labeling shelves. It was about making decisions.

What do I really need? What adds value to my day? What’s just taking up space? Answering those questions cleared more than her home; it cleared her mind.

The calm came in waves. It was the ease of finding her keys without a frantic search. It was the quiet joy of opening a closet and seeing everything she loved, nothing more. It was the lightness of knowing she wasn’t buried under ‘stuff,’ but surrounded by things she’d chosen, intentionally.

Now, organization is part of her self-care routine. Some people meditate; she sorts a drawer. Both bring clarity.

Both create space—in your home, in your head, in your heart. And that space? That’s where calm lives.

Mastering the Method

Today's Word: Methodical (adjective)

Definition: Done according to a systematic or established form of procedure; orderly and organized.

In a Sentence: "Liam took a methodical approach to packing for his trip, checking off each item on his list as he went."

Organizing Connection: Being methodical is key when tackling any organizing project. Instead of jumping from one task to another, create a simple plan: focus on one area, follow a step-by-step process, and stick with it until it’s done. This organized approach helps you stay on track and see progress faster.
