The New Seven Wonders of the World
In 2007, the world voted to update the original Seven Wonders list. After all, only one of the ancient wonders, the Great Pyramid of Giza, is still standing.
A Swiss foundation called New7Wonders launched a global
campaign that received over 100 million votes from people around the world. The result? A modern list of breathtaking landmarks that celebrate human creativity, culture, and resilience.
Great Wall of China (China): The Great Wall stretches over 13,000 miles and was built over several dynasties to protect
China from invaders. Contrary to myth, it’s not visible from space with the naked eye—but it’s still one of the most massive construction projects ever completed.
Petra (Jordan): Carved into rose-colored cliffs, Petra was once a bustling trade city. The famous building known as “The Treasury” got its name
from a legend that pirates hid treasure in the urn at the top—it’s still intact, but it’s solid stone.
Christ the Redeemer (Brazil): This towering statue in Rio de Janeiro stands 98 feet tall, not including its 26-foot pedestal. Lightning strikes it several times a year. One strike even damaged a
fingertip, which had to be repaired.
Machu Picchu (Peru): Often called the "Lost City of the Incas," Machu Picchu was never discovered by Spanish conquistadors. It remained unknown to the outside world until 1911, when explorer Hiram Bingham brought it to international
attention.
Chichen Itza (Mexico): During the spring and fall equinoxes, a shadow in the shape of a serpent slithers down the main pyramid’s steps, created by the precise angle of the sun. Ancient Mayans designed it this way to honor the god Kukulkan.
Roman Colosseum (Italy): The Colosseum could seat over 50,000 spectators for gladiator battles, animal hunts, and mock sea battles. They actually flooded the arena for naval reenactments in ancient Rome.
Taj Mahal (India): Built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, this ivory-white marble mausoleum changes color depending on the time of day. It's pinkish in the morning, bright white at noon, and golden at sunset.
These wonders aren’t just
beautiful—they tell stories of passion, power, mystery, and ingenuity. They’re proof that across time and continents, the human spirit loves to build, dream, and leave a mark on the world.
