It’s easy to say your home should feel like a sanctuary. But for many of us, home is a place
we hustle through—rushing out in the morning, dropping bags in a pile, tripping over shoes, and promising ourselves we’ll deal with the clutter tomorrow.
The truth is, your home can become the peaceful, grounding space you crave. But it doesn’t happen by accident.
You have to decide to treat your home like a sanctuary...and then take small, intentional steps to get there. Let’s talk about how.
1. Redefine What Sanctuary Means to You: A sanctuary doesn’t have to look like a spa catalog. Maybe it’s cozy instead of sleek. Maybe it’s quiet and filled with light, or maybe it’s
vibrant and full of life and color. Ask yourself: What makes me feel calm and at ease? This becomes your compass for the rest of the process.
2. Start with the Senses: Sanctuary is more about feeling than aesthetics. Think sensory:
Scent: Light a candle, diffuse lavender, or simmer cinnamon sticks on the stove.
Sound: Create a playlist of calming music or nature sounds. Silence can be lovely too.
Touch: Add softness where it matters—plush throw blankets, smooth sheets, fluffy towels.
Sight: Keep clutter out of your line of vision. Let natural light in. Choose colors that soothe you.
Taste: Keep a bowl of fresh fruit on the counter or your favorite tea stocked in the cupboard.
3. Clear the Physical Clutter to Clear Mental Clutter: Nothing disrupts peace like piles. You don’t have to overhaul your home in a day. Start with
one surface. Then one drawer. Then one room. Keep what supports your daily life. Let go of what drains you or weighs you down. And remember: It’s not about minimalism. It’s about meaning. 4. Create Zones of Comfort: Think of your sanctuary in zones:
A corner to read in
A clean kitchen counter to prepare nourishing meals
A
peaceful bedroom with no laundry piles
A bath area with your favorite towel, robe, and a candle
You don’t need more space. You need to use your space with
intention.
5. Bring Nature Inside: Even one small plant can soften a room. A vase of flowers. A rock you picked up on a walk. A photo of a tree-lined path. Nature reminds us to breathe. To slow down. To connect.
6. Say No to What Doesn’t Belong: This goes for objects, commitments, and even certain interactions. Your sanctuary doesn’t need chaos, guilt, or constant overwhelm lingering in it. If someone or something regularly brings stress into your life, it’s okay to set boundaries—with your schedule, your space, and your energy. Your home should protect your peace, not drain it.
7. Ritualize the Reset: Every evening, take five minutes to reset your space. Straighten pillows. Load the dishwasher. Put things back where they go. This isn’t about perfection. It’s about preparing a gentle landing pad for tomorrow’s self.
8. Honor What Your Home Does for You: Your home holds your sleep, your meals, your laughter, your hardest days. Treat it like a partner. Care for it the way it cares for you. That might mean investing time, doing a small repair, or simply saying “thank you” in your heart as you light a candle and sit with your thoughts.
Treating your home like a sanctuary isn’t about expensive upgrades or fancy décor. It’s about presence. Intention. Peace. And a quiet promise to yourself: This space is mine. This life is mine. And I deserve to feel at home within it.
