On July 4, 1776, a bold declaration was made. A group of determined individuals put their
names on a document that would change the course of history.
The signing of the Declaration of Independence was more than a political act. It was a commitment to the idea that people deserve the right to live freely, to speak their minds, to pursue happiness,
and to shape their own futures.
Every year on the Fourth of July, I pause to remember that moment—not just with flags and fireworks, but with gratitude. The freedoms we enjoy today were hard-won, and many continue to defend them with great courage and sacrifice.
But along with honoring our national freedom, I also take time to think about personal freedom—the kind that lives quietly inside our own homes and hearts.
This summer, what if you declared your own independence?
Not from a government, but from the habits, pressures, or patterns that keep you from feeling peaceful, purposeful, and free in your day-to-day life?
Here are 10 things you might choose to free yourself from:
2. The pressure to always be busy: Leave space for stillness, rest, and doing absolutely nothing when needed.
3. Negative self-talk: Be mindful of how you speak to yourself. Let your inner voice be a gentle one.
4. Unrealistic expectations: Life isn’t perfect. Humans aren't perfect. And that’s okay.
5. A packed calendar: Just because there's room on the schedule doesn’t mean you have to fill it.
6. Digital overwhelm: Clear your inbox, silence unnecessary
notifications, and make your devices work for you...not the other way around.
7. Guilt over past decisions: Give yourself permission to move forward with compassion and clarity.
8. The idea that you have to do it alone: Freedom sometimes means letting others in and accepting support.
9. Clothes that don’t fit or feel good: Keep only what you enjoy wearing and let the rest go without apology.
10. he need to keep up with anyone else: Your journey is yours. Define success on your own terms.
This Independence Day, I hope you’ll take a moment to appreciate both the freedom we share as a country and the
personal freedoms you can choose every day.
And if you'd like to share what you're freeing yourself from this summer, I’d love to hear it. Just hit reply.
Wishing you a
meaningful and peaceful Fourth of July!
