That Sick Feeling You Get After Overeating
Ever regret that second (or third) helping of mashed potatoes, or the slice of pie you had to try just because it was there? There's actually a word for that queasy, overstuffed feeling: crapulence.
It’s a real term, dating
back to the 18th century, and it originally described the aftermath of excessive eating or drinking...especially when it left you sluggish, bloated, or downright miserable.
The word comes from the Latin crapula, which itself was borrowed from Greek and referred to the headaches and nausea that followed a drinking binge.
Over time, it evolved into a catch-all for any kind of food or beverage overindulgence. Think of it as the sophisticated way to say “I shouldn’t have had that second burrito.”
So the next time you feel like you need to be rolled away from the dinner table, you can skip the guilt and simply say, “I’m suffering from a touch
of crapulence.”
It won’t make your stomach feel better—but it might make you smile.
