The Town That Painted It's Houses Blue
Tucked into the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco is Chefchaouen, a town unlike any other...because nearly every building is painted a vivid shade of blue.
Wandering its narrow lanes feels like stepping into a
watercolor painting, with blue-washed walls, blue staircases, and even blue flowerpots. The effect is both calming and breathtaking, drawing visitors from around the world.
The origin of this tradition is a bit of a mystery. Some say it began in the 1930s, when Jewish refugees settled there and painted the walls blue to
symbolize the heavens and a connection to God. Others believe the blue helps keep homes cooler in the summer or deters mosquitoes.
Whatever the reason, the tradition stuck, and residents continue to refresh the paint regularly, keeping the town’s
signature color alive.
