Sardines...From Strange to Superfood
Sardines might seem like a quirky food choice today...tiny fish packed into little tins...but their popularity goes back centuries.
Named after the Italian island of Sardinia, where they were once found in abundance,
sardines became especially common in the 19th century when canning made them easy to store and ship. What once seemed unusual quickly became a staple in pantries worldwide.
Beyond their history, sardines are nutritional powerhouses. They’re rich in omega-3 fatty acids that support heart health, loaded with vitamin D for
strong bones, and packed with protein that keeps you feeling satisfied. Unlike larger fish, they’re also low in mercury, making them one of the healthiest seafood options around.
Most people can enjoy sardines without worry, but those who need to watch their sodium intake or who have gout may want to limit them, since
canned varieties can be salty and naturally high in purines.
For everyone else, these little fish can be a surprisingly smart, and very nutritious, addition to the menu.
