Building Sandcastles
Did you
know the perfect ratio of sand to water is what gives sandcastles their strength? Too dry and they crumble, too wet and they collapse. Scientists have found that about 8 parts sand to 1 part water is the magic formula—just enough to form tiny bridges between sand grains that hold structures together.
The tallest
sandcastle ever built stood over 69 feet high and was completed in Denmark in 2021, using over 5,000 tons of sand! Sandcastle competitions around the world draw professional sculptors who use palette knives, melon ballers, plastic straws, and even brushes to create texture and intricate detail.
Want to build a great one
yourself? Try these quick tips:
– Use wetter sand for the base—you want it to be firm, not drippy.
– Pack your sand tightly—fill buckets in layers
and tamp each layer down with your hands or feet.
– Carve from the top down—that way gravity won’t collapse your castle as you work.
– Bring
tools—a plastic knife, spoon, paintbrush, or even a straw can help with carving details or blowing away loose sand. A sandcastle kit for the little
ones in your life may be your best bet. – Smooth with water—drip a little extra water to soften sharp edges and make surfaces shine.
You don’t
need an engineering degree to make something amazing at the beach—just a little patience, the right sand, and maybe a good beach hat.

Here's what just one GON reader had to say...
"I appreciate your organizing tips. Before reading it, I always tried to bite off too big of a piece in organizing, got overwhelmed and just put it all back like it was. I felt like a failure. It is encouraging to know that
other people sometimes have to take small bites of something to get the job done. Thank you!"
