GON Reader Question
Hi Maria,
I have been following you for many years. Thank you for all you do. My question is, now that camping season is over, I need to start fall
cleaning. Should you clean one room at a time until it's all done or do one chore in each room?

Monique,
Thank you so much for your message...and thank you for being with me all these years!
Now that fall is moving into its cozier, late-season stretch, you're certainly not alone in wanting to give your home a good reset before winter officially settles in.
This is the time of year when
many of us look around (after vacations, camping, and all the summer fun are long behind us) and think, "All right… time to get things back to calm and comfortable again."
There isn’t one universal “right way” to tackle fall cleaning, but there is a right way for you, depending on how your mind works and what feels motivating. Here’s a
breakdown to help you choose.
Cleaning One Room at a Time
This method is ideal if you love seeing a full transformation. You get the satisfaction of a completely refreshed room. It helps prevent overwhelm because you’re working in
contained spaces. And it works especially well if you’re preparing certain rooms for holiday company.
If you’re someone who likes finishing one space and then enjoying that little victory, this might be your style.
Doing One Chore Throughout the Whole House
This method is great if you like efficiency and keeping a rhythm. You stay in “task mode” without switching gears. It’s faster for things like dusting, vacuuming, or washing windows. And it keeps you moving, which can help maintain momentum on busy late-November
days.
If you love a good groove, and the satisfaction of seeing an entire task disappear everywhere, this might be your best fit.
If you’re still not sure which direction to
take, here’s my hybrid method:
Start by completely resetting just one room...the one you use most. A refreshed kitchen or living room can lift your spirits every time you walk through it. It gives you that “ahhh, this feels better” feeling right away.
Then switch to a chore-by-chore approach for the rest of the house.
Wipe down surfaces in the whole house.
It’s efficient, it flows, and it helps you finish
strong before the busyness of December.
That being said, late fall is already a full season, so don’t pressure yourself to do everything in one weekend. Small, steady sessions are perfectly fine. Turn on some music, pace yourself, and enjoy the process of making your home feel peaceful and ready for winter.
Monique, thank you again for your question and for being such a loyal GON reader!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your
family!
