Icicles: Winter's Beauty
There’s something mesmerizing about icicles. They appear quietly, almost magically, after a stretch of freezing temperatures...clear, glassy droplets suspended in time.
You might spot them dangling from gutters, porch
railings, or the bare branches of a tree after a heavy frost. They catch the winter sunlight in a way that makes you pause, even for just a second, because for all the cold this season brings, icicles add a touch of delicate beauty you can’t help but admire.
But beyond their sparkle, icicles tell a story. They form when
snow begins to melt from a roof or branch, drips downward, and instantly refreezes in the frigid air. Layer by layer, they grow longer, sharper, heavier.
Years ago, people used to read icicles almost like weather reports...long, thick ones meant days
of consistent freezing; short, stubby ones signaled quick temperature swings. Today, we simply enjoy them, but they’re still quiet little reminders that nature is always busy working, even when everything looks still.
Of course, icicles come with their own lessons...look up, slow down, pay attention. They encourage a
moment of mindfulness right in the middle of winter’s rush.
And they’re a nudge to care for our homes, too. Heavy icicles along the roofline can hint at heat escaping or gutters that need a little attention when spring arrives.
The next time you walk outside and see a row of shimmering icicles above you, take it as a gentle winter whisper: beauty can show up in the coldest places, and even the smallest things can teach us something if we’re watching closely.
