As the holidays settle in and our days fill with errands, gatherings, and a little extra
bustle, I find myself thinking about small ways to make someone else’s load a bit lighter.
Not big, dramatic gestures; just simple kindnesses that fit into an ordinary day and still make a real difference. And when we plan for them, even just a little, we’re far
more likely to actually follow through.
Here are thoughtful, organized ways to give back this season (and well into the new year), all easy enough to weave into everyday life.
1. A little “giving envelope” goes a long way
Keep a few small-denomination gift cards on hand ($5 to a local coffee shop, Walgreens, or a nearby bakery.) They’re perfect for handing to someone who brightened your day, someone going above and beyond, or even a stranger who just looks like they could use a lift. Having them pre-purchased means you don’t hesitate when the
moment arises.
2. Round up and let it count
Most stores and online checkouts offer a quick “round up” option for charities. It’s small, effortless, and adds up over the season. Think of it as a tiny kindness that snowballs into something
bigger when many of us choose it.
3. Coats, scarves, mittens: someone needs the extras you’re not using
Do a quick scan of your closet for warm items you no longer love or simply don’t reach for. Many communities collect winter wear for
shelters and outreach programs, and these pieces often go straight into the hands of people who need them right away. It’s decluttering with purpose.
4. Give the humane society a little boost
Shelters go through a surprising amount of pet
food, towels, and simple supplies. Pick up an extra bag of food or a few cans when you’re at the store, and drop them off the next time you’re out running errands. It’s a small stop that supports a lot of wagging tails.
5. Sign up for one shift
Volunteering doesn’t have to be a big commitment. One two-hour shift at a local pantry, warming center, or community event can make a huge difference. If calendars overwhelm you, choose a date now and add it to your planner. Then treat it as gently but firmly as any other appointment.
6. Keep a
“kindness basket” in the car
This can be as simple as a few travel-size toiletries, hand warmers, socks, granola bars, or bottled water. When you come across someone who needs help, you’re ready. It turns a moment of wishing you could do more into a moment where you can.
7. Donate blood if you’re able
Blood donation centers always need donors, especially in winter. One appointment can save lives, and you can schedule it just like a haircut, once every few months, marked neatly on your calendar.
8. Share from your own abundance
If you declutter regularly, you already know how quickly extra items add up, like books you’ve finished, duplicate kitchen tools, wreaths you no longer hang, etc. Rehoming gently-used items through community groups, shelters, or neighbor-to-neighbor programs is a wonderful way to let your extras move on to someone who truly needs
them.
Small acts of kindness don’t have to wait for the perfect moment or the perfect mood. With just a little planning and a few thoughtful supplies ready to go, giving back becomes easy, natural, and part of everyday life...during December and far beyond..
