Sometimes, life feels full. Work, family, errands, commitments, notifications, and constant
“just one more thing” moments can leave us stretched thin.
In the middle of all that, our own needs are often the first to slide to the bottom of the list. But, taking time for yourself isn’t selfish. It’s necessary.
To show up well for everything and everyone else, you need moments to pause, breathe, and reset. That’s where ME time comes in.
I make it a priority to carve out at least 30 minutes of ME time every day and I protect it.
Yesterday, I used that time to work on a crossword puzzle. The day before, I gave myself a simple at-home manicure.
Some days it’s reading. Other days it’s a quiet walk or sitting with a cup of coffee. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s consistent and it makes a difference.
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s permission.
1. Shift the Mindset: Everyone needs downtime.
Many of us fall into “superhuman mode,” pushing through fatigue and stress because there’s always more to
do.
But burnout doesn’t happen all at once. It builds quietly.
Recognizing when you feel overwhelmed,
anxious, or exhausted is a skill. Giving yourself daily downtime, however small, helps prevent emotional overload and keeps stress from becoming your default setting.
Rest isn’t a reward for finishing everything. It’s a requirement for sustaining anything.
2. Delegate Without Apologizing
You do not need to do everything yourself. Partners, teens, older children, friends, neighbors, or someone you hire can all share responsibility. Dishes, laundry, errands, yard work, rides...many tasks can be reassigned or shared. The key is asking clearly and kindly. People
aren’t mind readers. Delegating isn’t failing. It’s managing your energy wisely.
3. Choose Activities You Truly Enjoy
ME time should feel nourishing; not like another obligation. Whether it’s crafting, gardening, baking, movement, reading,
or creative time, choose something that genuinely brings you enjoyment. If you don’t like the activity, it won’t feel like rest. It will feel like another chore. Joy is a valid use of time.
4. Use ME Time as a Reset; Not a Guilt-Filled Reward
Instead of saving ME time only for the end of a long day, weave it into your routine. After focused work, household tasks, or emotional labor, allow yourself intentional breaks. Even short pauses can reset your mood and increase productivity. You don’t have to “earn” rest by exhaustion.
5. Use Found
Time Wisely
Waiting in line, sitting in the car, laundry cycles, appointments; these moments add up. Instead of filling every gap with scrolling or another task, reclaim a few of those minutes for yourself. Deep breathing, reading, gentle stretching, or simply doing nothing can be incredibly restorative. Stillness is productive, too.
6. Pair ME Time with Low-Energy Tasks
Some activities naturally allow for rest and enjoyment at the same time. Relax while dinner cooks. Enjoy music while folding laundry. Bake if baking brings you joy; not because you “should.” These moments count as ME time when they feel calming rather than rushed. The key
is intention.
7. Hire Help When You Can
Sometimes the best way to gain time is to outsource it. A teenager mowing the lawn, walking the dog, babysitting, or helping with seasonal chores can be a small investment with a big return. Even
occasional help can free up mental and physical space. Time is valuable and so is your well-being.
8. Let Giving Be Your ME Time (If It Feels Right)
For some people, helping others is deeply restorative. Volunteering, baking for a cause,
knitting for charity, or offering time to a community organization can feel like meaningful ME time, as long as it energizes you rather than drains you. ME time doesn’t have to be solitary. It just has to be fulfilling.
9. Build Accountability and Make It a Habit
If ME time keeps getting pushed aside, ask for support. A friend, partner, or accountability buddy can help you stay consistent. Like any habit, ME time takes practice. Give yourself time to build it into your routine and allow flexibility. Consistency matters more than duration.
The Gentle Reminder...
You are important.
Your energy matters.
Taking care of yourself allows you to take better care of others.
So take the break. Sit with your tea. Step outside. Close your eyes for a moment. Even a few minutes a day can make a meaningful
difference.
