An Apple a Day
I love this time
of year when apple orchards are bursting with color. One of my favorite fall traditions is heading to an orchard, filling a basket with crisp apples, and then coming home to bake something cozy, like a bubbling apple crumble. I even enjoy decorating with apples...kitchen towels, candles, and little accents that bring that cheerful red and green into my home. Did you know there are over 7,500 varieties of apples worldwide? September is peak harvest season here
in the U.S., which makes it the perfect time to try a type you’ve never tasted before. Each variety has its own flavor and purpose, so it’s fun to experiment.
Honeycrisp: Sweet, juicy, and wonderfully crunchy, they're perfect for snacking.
Granny Smith: Tart and firm. These are ideal for baking pies or crisps because they hold their shape.
McIntosh: Soft and aromatic, Mcintosh apples are great for applesauce or
apple butter.
Fuji: Extra sweet with a long shelf life. These are perfect for packing in lunchboxes.
Cortland:
Slow to brown, these are perfect for fruit salads or cheese platters.
Next time you visit an orchard or the farmer’s market, pick up a few different varieties. Taste-test them, bake with them, or simply place a bowl of shiny apples on your table as a colorful seasonal centerpiece. Apples aren’t just food. They’re
a tradition that ties us to the season.
