Library Card Sign-Up Month
September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and I think that’s worth celebrating. I still remember the thrill of getting my very first library card, the sense of independence and possibility it brought. Even now, when I walk into a library, there’s a familiar excitement knowing I can explore new stories, ideas, and discoveries with just one small card.
A library card is still one of the best free tools for learning and entertainment. Today’s libraries go far beyond books. With a card, you can often access digital books, audiobooks, streaming movies, online classes, and even passes to local museums.
But here’s the fun surprise: many libraries now lend out unconventional items too. Depending on where you live, you might be able to check out things like sewing machines, slow cookers, board games, gardening tools, or even a telescope for stargazing!
Here are a few fascinating library facts to inspire you this month:
The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world, with more than 173 million items in its collection.
The first U.S. public library was founded in 1743 by Benjamin Franklin and his subscription group, the Library Company of Philadelphia.
A 2023 survey showed that more Americans visited libraries than movie theaters...a reminder of how central
libraries still are in our communities.
If you haven’t used your library card in a while, September is the perfect time to renew your connection. And if you don’t have one yet, this month is your chance. It’s free, it’s powerful, and it may just open the door to resources you didn’t even know were waiting for
you.

Here's what just one GON reader had to say...
"Two things I love most about your ezine are the variety and quality of information. You include decluttering, seasonal reminders, and even little motivation boosts. It feels like you’re speaking directly to me, cheering me on."
