The Role of Music in Memory
Have you ever heard a song come on the radio and suddenly felt like you were transported back in time? Maybe it was your high school prom song, the lullaby your mom sang to you, or the tune playing during a summer road trip.
Music has a remarkable way of acting like a time machine, pulling memories from the back of our minds and placing them front and center.
Scientists have found that music activates multiple areas of the brain, including those linked to emotion and memory.
That’s why a melody can spark vivid details...a specific place, the scent in the air, even what you were wearing. Unlike other memory triggers, music taps both the emotional and logical parts of the brain, making recollections feel stronger and more meaningful.
Beyond nostalgia, music can also support memory in powerful ways. It’s been used to help patients with Alzheimer’s reconnect with loved ones and moments they thought were lost. For all of us, keeping a playlist of “memory songs” can be a joyful way to preserve life’s milestones.
Next time you hear a familiar tune, let yourself lean into the emotions it stirs. It’s more than just music; it’s part of your story.

Here's what just one GON reader had to say...
"I’ve been feeling pretty heavy these past few weeks, weighed down
by stress and a lot on my mind. Yesterday's newsletter about spreading light touched me in a way I didn’t expect.
It reminded me that even when I’m struggling, I can still brighten someone else’s day. In turn, it lifts me up
too.
Today I made a point to compliment a coworker, and seeing her smile lightened my heart. Thank you for the gentle reminder that light is something we can both give and receive."
