The First Football Game
Did you
know the very first intercollegiate football game was played on November 6, 1869, between Rutgers and Princeton? Rutgers won 6–4, but the game barely resembled football as we know it today.
With 25 players per side and rules borrowed from rugby
and soccer, the play was chaotic and rough. No forward passes, no protective gear, and no touchdowns as we know them...just scrappy determination and a ball that could only be kicked or batted.
That single game started a tradition that would grow into one of America’s most beloved sports. Today, football is as much about
community as it is about competition. Families gather around the TV, fans pack stadiums, and friends share food and laughter along with the game. From a muddy field in New Jersey to billion-dollar stadiums, football has become a true fall classic.
