What’s That Tower For?
Ever drive by a water tower and wonder why it’s there, besides being a giant billboard for your town’s name or mascot? Most people don’t realize water towers are an essential part of keeping our faucets flowing and fire hydrants ready.
Inside
that tall structure is a massive tank, usually holding hundreds of thousands of gallons of water. The height isn’t for show. It uses gravity to create the water pressure that pushes clean water into our homes, schools, and businesses.
At night, when
demand is low, pumps fill the tower. During the day, when everyone’s showering, washing dishes, or running laundry, the tower releases water to keep the system steady.
Crews just painted a nearby water tower where I live with the town name and logo, and it looks great! That paint job, however, is not just cosmetic. The
coating protects the steel from rust and corrosion, helping the tower last for decades.
Mindfully notice the water towers in your town today. They're not only landmarks. They're the reason you can enjoy a strong shower and a steady stream of water
every single day.
