On a recent walk in my neighborhood, I noticed the first hints of color peeking through the
trees. Just a few edges tinged with orange and red, while most of the leaves are still holding on to their summer green.

It’s that in-between time where change has started, but the full transformation hasn’t yet arrived. And that made me think: October is the
perfect moment to “turn a new leaf” in our lives, too.

We often wait until January for a fresh start, but why not now? As the trees begin their slow and graceful shift, we can take cues from them. Here are seven “turning a new leaf” lessons we can borrow from autumn:

1. Start Small, Like a Hint of Color. Just as leaves change gradually, your new beginning doesn’t have to be drastic. Choose one tiny change, like clearing off your kitchen table each evening, that signals a fresh start.

2. Let Go Without Guilt. Trees don’t apologize for dropping their leaves. If you have a habit, item, or commitment that no longer serves you, release it. The space you create will make room for something better.

3. Shift Your Perspective. Leaves turning color remind us that
change can be beautiful, not scary. Try reframing one task you’ve been dreading: instead of “I have to clean this closet,” think “I’m creating space for what matters most.”

4. Celebrate the Season You’re In. Each season has its own charm. Instead of wishing away busy schedules or cooler weather, find small ways to
embrace them, like cozying up with a blanket and a book...and a handy mug warmer keeps your drink warm while you savor every page.  5. Trust That New Growth Will Come. Autumn may look like an ending, but it’s really a preparation for spring. Even if you feel stuck, remind yourself that every cleared space or improved routine is laying the groundwork for something new.

6. Keep What Brings You Joy. Leaves don’t all change at once. Some stay green a little longer. In your own life, not everything needs to go. Keep the routines, items, or commitments that still feel vibrant and energizing.

7. Make Change a
Ritual. Nature gives us this reminder every single year: change is natural. Why not create your own October ritual of turning a new leaf, whether that’s updating a goal, refreshing a corner of your home, or beginning a habit that carries you into the holidays with more peace?

As October unfolds and the trees continue their
colorful dance, remember that your own life can shift just as gracefully. Turning a new leaf doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It’s simply an invitation to welcome fresh energy, one small leaf at a time.

On another note...Reading, for me, is more than words on a page. It's an experience...an adventure. The right accessories make it even better, whether you’re curled up at home on a cozy chair, traveling, or sneaking in a chapter before bed.
