Sweet Serendipity

Some of the
best things in life happen by accident...and the beloved caramel apple is one of them. Back in the 1950s, a Kraft employee was experimenting with leftover Halloween caramels. He melted them down, dipped apples into the gooey sweetness, and unknowingly created a new fall tradition. What started as a happy kitchen accident quickly turned into a seasonal favorite, now found at fairs, festivals, and family kitchens everywhere.

There’s something irresistible about that combination of crisp, tart apple and chewy, buttery caramel. It’s a sensory experience...sweet and sticky in your hands, crunchy and juicy in your mouth, with a burst of autumn flavor in every bite. Over time, people have dressed them up with crushed nuts, candy pieces, or even chocolate drizzles, but the original is still a
classic.

Caramel apples remind us of the power of simple joys. They don’t need to be complicated or fancy to bring smiles and happy memories. Sometimes a little creativity with what you already have leads to something unexpectedly wonderful.

And perhaps there’s a lesson in organizing here, too. Even when things feel messy, leftovers or odds and ends can sometimes spark new ideas. With a fresh perspective, a cluttered corner might turn into cozy storage, or an old basket could become a perfect catch-all. Like caramel apples, those happy surprises often stick around far longer than we expect.

Here's what just one GON reader had to say...

"Thanks for dealing with the problems of the world (September
14th issue) that we’re all facing. So many people just brush it under the rug and smile and say everything‘s fine but life is not real fine at the moment.
There are things happening that we don’t understand. It’s good to have it pointed out and say it’s OK to feel bad. This too shall pass."
