Today is National Fossil Day...a celebration of the remains and traces of ancient life.
While museums display dinosaur bones and prehistoric plants, most of us have our own kind of “fossils” right at home.

No, not trilobites in the pantry or a T. rex in the garage, but clutter that’s been sitting around so long it might as well be part of
another era.

Take a look around your space. Do you still have:

A flip phone that hasn’t lit up since 2008?

VHS tapes with nothing to play them on?

Clothes with shoulder pads or neon that scream “another lifetime”?

Kitchen gadgets that were once trendy but never made it past the honeymoon phase?

These everyday “fossils” linger quietly in the corners of our homes, taking up valuable space and energy. They may even make us chuckle. Who knew we’d hold onto that pager or that stack of floppy disks for so
long?

How to Start Your Own “Fossil Dig”

1. Pick a Dig Site: Choose one area: the junk drawer, the back of the closet, or under the
bed.

2. Unearth the Old Stuff: As you go through, ask yourself: “Is this from a past era of my life? Does it serve me today?”
3. Decide Its Fate:
Some fossils deserve to be archived (like family heirlooms or memorabilia). Others? They’re ready for the donation bin, recycling, or a proper goodbye.

4. Celebrate the Discovery: Finding these “ancient artifacts” is half the fun. Share a laugh with your family about what you’ve
uncovered.

National Fossil Day is a reminder that not all relics belong in our homes. Some deserve to be appreciated in a museum or at least in a memory box.

But the rest? Freeing yourself from outdated, unused items creates space for the present AND a little more breathing room for the future.

Channel your inner archaeologist. Grab a metaphorical shovel, dig into those clutter layers, and let go of the things that belong to
another time.
