Power Word: Umbriferous

Every
once in a while, you stumble across a word that feels tailor-made for October. Umbriferous (pronounced um-BRIF-er-us) is one of those. It means “giving shade” or “casting shadows.”

It comes from the Latin umbra, meaning “shadow,” and ferre, meaning
“to bear.” Just saying it out loud feels a little moody and mysterious...perfect for Halloween season.

You could describe a canopy of trees as umbriferous, their branches filtering the sunlight into shifting patterns.

Or, in a more playful sense, you might call that dark corner of your basement umbriferous, conjuring images of cobwebs and old boxes.

The word has an almost gothic elegance, which makes it a fun one to tuck into your vocabulary this time of year.

Beyond its poetic sound, umbriferous also reminds us of how shadows shape atmosphere. A shadowy front porch with a flickering jack-o’-lantern can feel inviting, while the
same shadows in an alley might feel eerie.

As you notice the longer autumn nights settling in, keep umbriferous in your pocket. Try it out in conversation, or drop it into your journal. It’s a small, clever way to savor the season and make even the
ordinary, like the shade under your favorite tree, feel just a little bit magical.

Here's what just one GON reader had to say...

"Your words have a way of making me feel less alone in the challenges I face. You remind me that small steps really do add up and that progress, no matter how slow, is still progress."
