There’s a big shift happening in my town. The old YMCA, where I’ve taught classes and worked
out for years, is closing. A brand-new Y building, in addition to the express Y that opened a few years ago, will be opening soon. It’s exciting to think about fresh equipment, brighter spaces, and new opportunities, but it also comes with a touch of sadness.

The old building has been part of our community for decades. Before it became
the Y, it was actually the town’s high school. For many long-time residents, those walls hold memories of lockers, hallways, and Friday night games. For staff and members who have been there for years, it’s not just a place to exercise. It has been part of our daily rhythm, friendships, and routines.

Change, even when positive, can tug
at the heart. It’s a reminder that everything evolves...buildings, organizations, people, and even ourselves. The trick is learning to honor what was...while welcoming what’s next.

Change has a funny way of being both unsettling and invigorating at the same time. We crave routine because it gives us comfort and predictability. But we
also grow through transition, through the unknown, the unfamiliar, and the unplanned.

When we resist change, it often feels like we’re clinging to solid ground while the world moves beneath us. But when we lean into it, we find that the very thing we feared might actually hold a new spark of inspiration.

Think about times in your own life when change turned out to be a blessing (a move that brought new neighbors who became friends, a job that opened new doors, or even a simple household update that made life easier.) Change rarely feels comfortable at first, but it often leads us to something better suited to who we’re becoming.

So while I’ll miss the familiar space and faces at the old Y, I also know that the laughter, sweat, and encouragement that filled those walls will carry forward...just in a new space, with new stories waiting to unfold.
