I recently had a work meeting at a local business. While we were chatting in the owner’s
office, something on the wall immediately caught my eye. It was a beautiful collage...a bulletin board filled with images, words, and little pieces of
inspiration. There were vacation destinations cut from magazines, comic strips pinned here and there, pictures of birds, and bold words like Empower and Create. When I commented on it, she smiled and told me the board was something she had been working on for quite some time.
She explained that it’s a continuous piece of artwork. Every so often she adds something new, moves things around, or removes items that no longer feel meaningful.
The birds, she said, are there because she loves to go on nature walks and identify bird calls. The travel images remind her of places she hopes to visit someday. The words help her stay focused on the kind of life she wants to live.
"It helps me remain focused and happy," she told me. "And it reminds me of
things I believe in and aspire to."
What she created is known as an expressive collage.
An expressive collage is a personal collection of images, words, textures, and objects arranged together to represent thoughts, goals, interests, and inspirations.
Unlike a traditional collage that focuses mainly on artistic style, an expressive collage is more about meaning than perfection. It’s a visual reflection of what motivates you.
Start with a Bulletin BoardChoose a bulletin board that feels
manageable in size. Cork boards work especially well because you can easily pin items and rearrange them whenever inspiration strikes. Some people like framed
boards for a more finished look, while others enjoy the casual feel of a simple cork board. The beauty of using a bulletin board is that nothing has to be permanent. Your collage can grow and change as you do.
Gather Pieces That Inspire You
The next step is collecting materials that catch your eye or hold personal meaning. Look through magazines, catalogs, postcards, old photographs, or even nature items like pressed leaves. Some possibilities include:
Inspirational words or quotes
Pictures of places you’d like to visit
Images that reflect hobbies or
interests
Photographs of loved ones
Comic strips or artwork that make you smile
Fabric scraps, ribbons, or textured papers
The goal isn’t to fill the board quickly. It’s to gather pieces that truly speak to you.
Begin Arranging Your BoardStart by pinning a few larger images first. These will act as anchors. Then
gradually layer smaller items around them. Some people prefer neat sections, while others enjoy overlapping pieces for a more relaxed, creative look. Because everything is pinned, you can move things around as often as you like. Add Personal Meaning
To make your collage even more expressive, consider adding handwritten notes, short affirmations, or words that describe what certain images represent. These small additions help turn the board into something deeply personal.
Let It Grow With You
One of the most meaningful things about an expressive collage is that it’s never truly finished. You can keep adding, adjusting, and refreshing it as your interests, goals, and motivations evolve.
Over time, the board becomes more than decoration. It becomes a gentle daily reminder of the things
that inspire you, the experiences you value, and the life you’re continuing to shape.

Whether I’m traveling, driving, walking, doing things around the house, or relaxing with a chapter before bed, audiobooks fit naturally into parts of my day when reading a physical book isn’t practical. Sometimes it’s simply a nice way to give my eyes a break and enjoy a story in a different way. If you’ve been curious about audiobooks, this might be the perfect time to give Audible a try.
