While many people think of closets, garages, and kitchen cabinets when spring organizing
season rolls around, there are other spots that deserve attention too...places that get used all the time but often get skipped over.
Giving these smaller, easy-to-ignore areas a spring edit can make daily life run more smoothly. You don’t necessarily need to do a massive overhaul. In many cases, all it takes is removing what doesn’t
belong, wiping things down, and putting back only what actually needs to be there.
Here are seven often-overlooked spots that are well worth a fresh spring reset.
1. Your Car
Your car can quietly collect a surprising amount of clutter over the winter months. Receipts get tucked into cup holders, extra gloves and scarves get left behind, snack wrappers pile up, and before long the whole space starts to feel messy and neglected.
Spring is the perfect time to give it a once-over.Take everything out that doesn’t belong. Toss trash, recycle old papers, and gather up any items that should be brought back into the house. Wipe down surfaces, shake out the mats, and restock
only the essentials...things like tissues, a phone charger, sunglasses, and perhaps a small umbrella.
When your car feels clean and orderly, even a quick trip to the store feels a little better.
2. Your Handbag
A handbag can become a catch-all without us even realizing it. Old receipts, gum wrappers, random pens, expired coupons, tissues, lip products, loose change, and who knows what else can build up fast. If your bag feels heavy, cluttered, or hard to dig through, it’s time for a spring edit.
Empty the entire thing and start fresh. Wipe out the inside, toss what you no longer need, and return only the items you actually use.
This is also a good time to switch to a lighter bag for spring if you tend to carry something larger and heavier through the winter months. A neater handbag saves time and makes you feel more pulled together when you’re on the
go. 3. The Kitchen Sink Area
The area around the kitchen sink gets used constantly, yet it’s often overlooked when it comes to organizing. Dish soap, scrub brushes, hand soap, sponges, towels, and random odds and ends can make this
hardworking area look cluttered quickly.
Take a look at what’s sitting around your sink and ask yourself what really needs to be there every day. Maybe you only need one good scrub brush, one bottle of soap, and a tidy spot for a dish cloth. Toss worn-out sponges, clean the tray or container holding your supplies, and wipe down the faucet and counter area well.
Since this is one of the most frequently seen spots in the kitchen, a little tidying here can have a big impact.
4. Porch or Deck Supplies
As the weather warms up, it’s natural to start thinking about spending more time outside. But before you settle in with a cup of coffee or start decorating for the season, it helps to take a good look at what has accumulated on the porch or deck.
Sweep away leaves and dirt, wipe down furniture, and gather
any items that wandered out there over the winter and never made their way back. Check cushions, planters, candles, garden tools, and outdoor decor. Get rid of anything broken, worn out, or no longer useful.
A cleaned-up outdoor space feels more inviting and helps
you enjoy the season that much more.
5. Pet Items
Pet supplies can easily spread throughout the house (leashes by the door, toys under furniture, treats in multiple spots, half-used grooming supplies, old bedding, and feeding accessories
that have seen better days.) Spring is a great time to gather it all together and see what’s worth keeping.
Wash pet beds, toss chewed-up or damaged toys, wipe down food and water mats, and check expiration dates on food and treats. Put daily items in one convenient location so they’re easier to grab when needed.
Our pets are part of the family, and keeping their things organized can make the whole house feel calmer and cleaner.
6. Your Cleaning Caddy
If your cleaning caddy or cleaning supply bucket is stuffed with half-empty bottles, dried-up sponges, and products you never use, it may be slowing you down more than helping. Spring is the perfect excuse to refresh it.
Take everything out and see what you actually reach for on a regular basis. Use up what you have before you buy more. And if you have something you don’t like, bid it farewell. Wipe out the caddy itself, consolidate duplicates if possible, and put back only the supplies that truly earn their place.
A simple, streamlined cleaning caddy makes everyday touch-ups much easier.
7. That Basket, Chair, or Drop Zone Where Random Things Land
Most homes have one. It
might be a chair in the bedroom, a basket near the stairs, a corner of the kitchen counter, or a spot near the entry where random items tend to land. It becomes the place where things sit temporarily, until temporary turns into a long-term pile.
This is an especially good spot to edit in spring because it tends to collect the leftovers
of daily life. Take everything out of that space and sort it properly. Return items to where they belong, toss what no longer matters, and think about whether the space needs a better system.
Sometimes a pile forms simply because there’s no true home for the things
being dropped there. Once you solve that, the clutter has less chance of building back up.
Spring organizing doesn’t always have to mean taking apart a whole closet or deep-cleaning an entire room. Sometimes the most satisfying progress comes from paying attention to the smaller spaces that affect daily life in quiet but constant ways.
Give a few of these overlooked spots a fresh edit, and you may be surprised at how much lighter and more organized your home feels.
