Power Word: Lethologica
You
know that moment. You’re mid-sentence, telling a story, and suddenly…nothing. The word you want is right there, so close you can almost feel it, but it just won’t come. You pause, snap your fingers, maybe say, "Ugh, what is that word?" Someone else jumps in with a guess (usually the wrong one), and the moment stretches just a bit longer than you’d like.
That experience has a name: lethologica...the frustrating, fascinating state of having a word on the tip of your tongue but not quite within reach. It’s easy to feel annoyed in those moments, especially if you pride yourself on being organized, articulate, and on top of things. But lethologica is actually a gentle reminder of how your mind works. It’s searching, sorting, reaching into a vast
mental filing system. The word is in there. It just hasn’t been retrieved yet.
And isn’t that interesting? Even when something feels "lost," it often isn’t gone at all, but rather simply waiting to be found. The key is knowing how to gently guide your
brain back to it instead of forcing it. Here are a few simple ways to help the word surface:
1. Describe it instead of forcing it. Say what you mean in other words. Your brain often fills in the blank once you circle around it.
2. Think of the first letter or sound. Even a small clue can unlock the rest.
3. Picture where you’ve heard or used it before. Was it in a book, a conversation, a show? Context helps
retrieval.
4. Let it go for a minute. Shift your attention. Ironically, the word often pops back when you stop trying so hard.
5. Use a "placeholder" and keep going. Say, "that thing" or "the word may come to me later" and move on. Your flow matters more than perfection.
There’s a lesson here that goes beyond language. How often do we do this in life? We feel stuck, unsure, or like we’ve forgotten
something important about ourselves...our confidence, our clarity, our next step. But maybe it’s not missing. Maybe it’s just not accessible in that exact moment.
Next time you find yourself in a moment of lethologica, don’t rush to fill the silence
or feel flustered by it. Smile at it. It’s proof that your mind is working behind the scenes, connecting dots, doing its thing.
Trust that what you need, whether it’s a word or a way forward, is already within you. Sometimes, it just takes a bit of
time to rise to the surface.

"Your March 24th issue was excellent, especially acknowledging that hope changes mindset, yet doesn't change the situation. Only our actions do that, except for the rare miracle cures."--
