The Salt of the Earth
"Salt of
the earth." I find myself using that phrase a lot. Usually when I’m talking about someone who’s just…good. Not flashy. Not looking for attention. Just steady, kind, and the kind of person you’re always glad to have in your life. But what does it actually mean?
The phrase goes way back to the Bible, specifically a teaching
where Jesus tells his followers, "You are the salt of the earth." Back then, salt wasn’t just something you sprinkled on food. It was essential. It preserved food, helped prevent spoilage, and was considered incredibly valuable. You didn’t waste it. You relied on it.
So when people heard that line, it wasn’t casual. It
was meaningful. It was like saying, "You matter. You make things better. You hold things together."
And that idea really hasn’t changed.
When I think about people who are "the salt of the earth," I don’t think about titles or
accomplishments. I think about the everyday people. The ones who check in on others. The ones who do what needs to be done without making a big deal about it. The ones who are dependable. You know they’ll show up.
They’re not trying to impress anyone. They’re just living in a way that quietly makes life better for the
people around them.
There’s also a bit of history tied to the value of salt itself. It was once so valuable that it was used in trade, and even connected to how people were paid.
It's a good little reminder for all of us. You don’t have to do something big or bold to make a difference. Sometimes it’s the small, consistent things…showing up, being kind, doing the right thing when no one’s watching…that really count.
That’s "salt of the earth." Simple, steady,
and meaningful in all the right ways.

Here's what just one GON reader had to say...
"I used to avoid my office because of all the paper piles. I never knew where to start, so I kept putting it off. Your tips helped me take a different approach. I set up a simple daily action system and just started small. A few minutes at a time really added up. Now I can actually see my desk, and I know where things are. It’s not perfect,
but it finally feels under control! Thank you!!"
