Coming Up for Air
It’s easy to
assume that dolphins and whales "breathe underwater" because they spend so much of their lives there. But they don’t. Dolphins, whales, and porpoises are mammals, just like us. That means they need air to survive.
Instead of gills like fish, they have lungs. So every breath they take happens at the surface. If you’ve ever
seen a whale rise up and release that dramatic spout of mist, or a dolphin pop up for a quick inhale, you’re witnessing something essential. That moment isn’t optional. It’s life-sustaining.
They breathe through blowholes located on the top of their heads, which makes surfacing quick and efficient. A dolphin can take a
breath in a fraction of a second, then dive back down. Some whales can hold their breath for incredibly long periods...anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour depending on the species. The Sperm Whale, for example, is known for its deep dives and can stay underwater for well over an hour before needing air again.
What’s
even more fascinating is that these animals don’t breathe automatically the way we do. For us, breathing happens without thinking. For them, every breath is a conscious decision. They have to remember to come up for air. Even when they sleep, part of their brain stays awake just enough to control breathing and surface when needed.
Also, here’s an important piece that ties it all together: they need both air and water to survive...but in very different ways. Air keeps them breathing, and water keeps their bodies functioning.
There's a lesson in there for us. In our busy, full lives, it’s easy to keep pushing forward
without stopping to "come up for air." But just like those dolphins and whales, we function better when we pause, reset, and take in what we need.
Today, take a moment. Step away from whatever you’re doing, even briefly. Take a deep breath in, hold it, and let it out slowly. Sometimes the simplest things are what keep us
going strong.
