Why Do We Shake Hands?
Have you
ever stopped to think about how often you shake hands? Job interviews. Business meetings. Weddings. Introductions. Congratulations. Agreements. We do it so automatically that most of us never give it a second thought. Yet the simple handshake has a history that stretches back thousands of years.
Historians believe one
reason people began shaking hands was to show they weren't carrying a weapon. By extending an open right hand, you demonstrated peaceful intentions. Some believe the shaking motion may have helped reveal any hidden weapons tucked into sleeves. Whether or not that was always the case, the gesture became a symbol of trust.
Ancient artwork from Greece dating back more than 2,000 years depicts people shaking hands. Over time, the practice spread through various cultures and eventually became one of the most widely recognized greetings in the world.
The handshake also became a way to seal an agreement. Long before
contracts, emails, and digital signatures, a handshake often signified that two people had reached an understanding. Even today, many people feel that a handshake carries a sense of sincerity and commitment.
Of course, greetings continue to evolve. In recent years, fist bumps have become increasingly common, especially
among younger generations and in casual settings. While the traditional handshake remains popular, fist bumps have earned their place as a friendly and informal way to say hello, offer congratulations, or celebrate a shared success. They're quick, easy, and some people feel they're less likely to spread germs in the process.
It's interesting how customs change over time while still serving the same purpose. Whether it's a handshake, a fist bump, a bow, or a wave, the goal remains remarkably similar: acknowledging another person and creating a small moment of connection.
