Sea Salt...What’s the Real Story?
Sea salt sounds romantic, doesn’t it? You picture ocean breezes, sun-drenched salt flats, maybe even someone harvesting crystals by hand along a sparkling coastline. But is sea salt really from the ocean? And is it truly healthier than regular table salt?
Yes, sea salt does come from the ocean
(or salty bodies of water). It’s made by evaporating seawater, leaving behind mineral-rich salt crystals. Depending on where it’s harvested, it may contain tiny amounts of trace minerals like magnesium, calcium, and potassium. That’s what gives some sea salts their subtle color differences...light gray, pink, or even slightly beige.
Table salt, on the other hand, is usually mined from underground salt deposits. It’s more heavily processed to remove impurities and trace minerals, which leaves it very fine and consistent in texture. It also typically has iodine added, an important nutrient that helps support healthy thyroid function. That’s something sea salt usually does not contain unless it’s specifically labeled as iodized.
So…is sea salt healthier?
Nutritionally, not really. Both sea salt and table salt are about 97–99% sodium chloride. The trace minerals in sea salt exist in such small amounts that they don’t make a meaningful
difference to your health. Your body processes the sodium the same way regardless of the source.
The real difference comes down to texture and flavor. Sea salt crystals are often larger and can feel crunchier. Some people find the taste slightly more complex. Because of the larger crystals, you might sprinkle a bit less
without realizing it, but teaspoon for teaspoon, sodium content is nearly the same.
Here’s what does matter: overall sodium intake. Most health organizations recommend keeping sodium under about 2,300 mg per day (and even lower for some people, especially those with high blood pressure). Whether it’s sea salt, kosher
salt, pink salt, or classic table salt, moderation is key.

Here's what just one GON reader had to
say...
"I had a laugh and thought I’d share. Some time ago you had written a helpful article regarding alternating, 'sandwiching' your tasks with rewards throughout the day in order to stay productive.
I saved that article in order to read later, but I’d forgotten about it until today. I was sorting old recipes and came across one for sandwich recipes to try. I was about to move it to my sandwich folder when I paused to take a look at it.
It was your article, stored under 'Sandwich Recipes'! Thanks for all that you share!"
