Why Do We Toss Coins into Fountains?
If you've ever tossed a coin into a fountain and made a wish, you've participated in a tradition that dates back thousands of years.
Long before modern plumbing, people depended on natural springs and wells for fresh water. Because water was essential for life, many ancient cultures believed
springs were inhabited by gods, spirits, or other supernatural forces. People would leave small offerings (often coins) as a way of expressing gratitude or asking for good fortune, health, or safe travels.
The practice continued through the centuries. The ancient Romans were known to throw coins into water sources while
traveling, hoping for protection and a safe return home.
Today, most of us don't believe a fountain is home to a water spirit, but the tradition remains. One of the most famous examples is the fountain at the Trevi Fountain in Rome. Legend says that tossing one coin over your shoulder into the fountain ensures that you'll
someday return to the city.
Millions of coins are tossed into fountains around the world every year. In many places, the money is collected and donated to charities, turning a simple wish into something that can help others.
What began as an offering to the gods has become one of the world's most enduring traditions...a small act that connects us to people who lived thousands of years before us.
