Protecting Your Emotional Weather
Most of us pay attention to the weather outside. We check the forecast, carry an umbrella if rain is expected, or wear a coat when temperatures drop.
But many of us pay far less attention to our emotional weather.
Our emotions are influenced by what we consume throughout the day. The people we spend time with, the news we watch, the social media we scroll through, the conversations we have, and even the amount of sleep we get can all affect how we feel.
While we can't control everything that happens to
us, we can often influence what we allow into our minds.
If you find yourself feeling discouraged, anxious, or irritable, it may be worth asking a few questions:
Am I spending too much time consuming negative
news?
Am I around people who constantly complain?
Have I been focusing on problems instead of
possibilities?
Am I getting enough sleep, exercise, and fresh air?
Have I taken time to do something I
enjoy?
Small changes can make a surprisingly big difference. A walk outside, a conversation with a positive friend, listening to music, reading an uplifting book, or simply taking a break from the news can help shift your outlook.
Positive emotions don't happen by accident. They are often the result of the choices we make every day.
Just as we protect ourselves from bad weather, it's worth taking steps to protect our emotional weather as
well.
