Choosing the Right Paint Finish
Picking a paint color gets all the attention, but choosing the paint finish is just as important. The finish affects how your walls look, how easy they are to clean, and how well they hide imperfections.
Flat (Matte): Flat paint has no shine, making it excellent at hiding small
dents, patches, and uneven walls. It creates a soft, cozy look, but it isn't the easiest to clean. It's a great choice for ceilings, adult bedrooms, and low-traffic rooms.
Eggshell: Eggshell has a slight sheen...just enough to make it more durable than flat paint while still hiding most wall
imperfections. It's one of the most popular finishes for living rooms, dining rooms, and hallways.
Satin: Satin has a smooth, velvety finish that stands up well to everyday wear. It's easier to wipe clean than eggshell, making it a favorite for family rooms, children's bedrooms, kitchens, and
bathrooms.
Semi-Gloss: Semi-gloss is noticeably shinier and very durable. It resists moisture and cleans up easily, which is why it's commonly used on trim, doors, cabinets, kitchens, and bathrooms.
High-Gloss: The shiniest of all finishes, high-gloss creates a polished, dramatic look. It's extremely durable but also highlights every dent and imperfection, so it's usually reserved for furniture, cabinets, and decorative trim.
When choosing a finish, think about more than appearance. Consider how much traffic the room gets, how often the walls will need cleaning, and whether the surface is perfectly smooth. The right finish can help your paint job stay beautiful for years.
