My Favorite Way for Getting TO DOs Done Faster
Have you ever been to a Jimmy's Johns Gourmet Sandwiches shop? There are
a bunch where I live and I stop and grab a sandwich there now and then. I'm
always joking that my sandwich is ready before I even order it! That's only a
slight exaggeration. I essentially order my sandwich at the cash register, and
as I'm ordering, the sandwich makers begin making the sandwich, in assembly-line
fashion. One person grabs the bread and adds the deli options and cheese, the
next person adds the veggies and other toppings, the next person wraps and
delivers. Honestly, I've never had to 'wait' for my sandwich, no matter how
crowded it is. I finish paying...and then seconds later, I'm picking up my
sandwich and happily walking out the door with it.
One of the reasons they're so 'freaky-fast' (as their whimsical signage
implies), is because everyone is responsible for their own 'part' of the
project. When you're only doing one thing over and over again, instead of
starting/stopping/and re-starting, you become a lot more efficient at that
one part, and therefore can do it faster and better the more you do it.
Think about it this way. Let's say you're sending out wedding invitations that
have many pieces (the invite, the reception card, driving directions, the RSVP
card, the little piece of tissue paper that often accommodates them, etc.), the
envelope, address labels for the recipients, return address labels, and postage.
You can grab each insert one by one, putting each in the envelope, stick on an
address label, adhere a return address label, adhere postage, and then seal the
envelope...but that's starting, stopping, starting, stopping, etc. for the whole
process.
If you first collate ALL the inserts, then stick the inserts into ALL the
envelopes, then add ALL the address labels, then adhere ALL the return address
labels, then affix ALL the postage, and then seal ALL the envelopes, the job
will get done in a faster, more efficient manner. It's faster because you're
sticking to ONE activity at a time, and becoming super proficient at that
activity.
If you have others helping, assembly-line style like at Jimmy John's, you're
really going to optimize your speed and get the job done in a fraction of the
time than if one person were handling it.
I actually used this method prior to vacation. I had to get four weeks worth of
newsletters done, four week's worth of web site updates completed, four weeks
worth of social media posts handled, etc...all before I left for my trip. Rather
than doing one newsletter, one set of web site updates, and social media posts
for one week...and doing a newsletter, web site updates, and social media posts
for week two, etc. I consolidated like-items. In other words, I did ALL four
weeks of my newsletters first, all four weeks of my web site updates second, and
ALL four weeks of my social media posts next, etc.
Once I'm 'on a roll' with something, I can get it done in no time. But if I
have to start something, stop, and then start again, that process begins to
become disjointed, causing a slow down. It takes time for your brain to get
into another mode, versus continuing what you're already doing.
Whether you're cooking, quilting, building something, gardening, working at
the office...whatever it is, think about the assembly-line process, and how
you can make it work for you to get your TO DOs done faster.
By the way, speaking of being productive, if you're wanting to get more items
crossed off your To Do List, I highly recommend The Action Machine. Visit:

A Tool to Help You Save and Access Information
A very helpful tool I use is Evernote. It comes in an app for my phone,
and I can also access it on my computer and tablet. I keep my 'to buy' notes so
I know what I am needing at the store. I keep my recipe files on there so I have
my recipes handy on my tablet when I cook something special. I also keep gift
ideas on there, gardening notes, party planning notes, other project notes, etc.
I love having all that information at my fingertips no matter where I am. And
best of all, it's free!

P.S. from Maria Gracia, I second Linda's recommendation. I use Evernote all
the time. Google it...I'm sure you'll like it as well.

Everyone gets 24 hours in each day. Because our time is so precious, and because
it vanishes so quickly, it's vitally important to use that time well.
What do you get accomplished each day?
If the answer is, 'next to nothing', or 'not nearly as much as I would like,'
then it's definitely worth it to take a look at what's on your TO DO list, and
if those items are helping you get to where you want to be.
Don't confuse activity with real accomplishments. Twiddling your thumbs is
activity, but it's not going to get you anywhere fast.
In light of this, I've recently discovered an incredible tool that will help you
get more done than you've ever imagined.
It's called The Action Machine, my husband and I BOTH use it, AND we highly
recommend it to anyone who wants to make the most of his or her day. Visit:
