Being Disorganized Can
Throw Your Health Out-of-Whack
Just like physical, paper, and email clutter can get completely out of
control if you neglect it, being disorganized can throw your health and
well-being completely out-of-whack as well. Here are 4 ways to get organized for
a healthier, happier you.
1. Don't get so busy that 'unhealthy' becomes more enticing and convenient
than 'healthy.' There is no doubt that sometimes it's nice to eat out, or
order take-out. My family opts for doing so a few times a month. BUT, when doing
so becomes a nearly daily habit, it can wreak havoc on your wallet and your
health. Just like you schedule time for a haircut or a dental appointment, it's
also important to get organized and schedule time (indicated on your calendar)
for making a grocery list, going to the supermarket, and cooking a nutritious
dinner. When scheduling, set a definite date and time for creating your list and
actually shopping a few days prior to the meal...rather than an hour before
you're ready to eat, when you're bound to feel rushed and more likely to abandon
those plans for 'eat out/take out' options.
2. 'Lack of time' is a poor excuse for skipping physical activity. We all
know how important physical activity is for our health, but it's very easy to
'skip it' without 'immediate consequences.' Long-term consequences are less
visible and rarely thought of, until they actually happen. Physical inactivity
can contribute to anxiety and depression, is shown to be a risk factor for
cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer, contributes to dementia, is a
factor in muscle atrophy, and has many other negative effects as we age.
Becoming more adamant in getting in your daily physical activity and scheduling
time to do so is vital. Joining a regular class is good because generally when
we're 'signed up' for something, we're more apt to do it. Teaming up with a
friend for a daily evening walk, bike ride, or swim is a good idea. Think about
when exercise is more likely to happen for you, and schedule it then. By the
way, those who can exercise in the morning, are more likely to do so than those
who must wait until the evening hours, when many folks get tired and want to
relax. That being said, if you must exercise at night, schedule a consistent
time to do so. What can you do to ensure you're getting in at least 30 minutes
of daily exercise? It doesn't have to be crazy-hard...it just has to keep you
moving.
3. Organize your bedtime. What? Why does bedtime need to be organized?
Because MOST people do not get enough rest. The average person requires seven
to nine hours of restful sleep. Plan your day and schedule bedtime so that
you're getting your 40 winks every single night. This means going to bed when
you're scheduled to go to bed...not after the late, late, late show. It also
means being organized with your food and beverage choices so what you're
consuming isn't interfering with your bedtime or quality of sleep.
4. Get your environment into good shape. If the place(s) where you spend
most of your day (home/office) is disorganized, it's going to affect your
ability to stay organized with your health. If you're spending all day looking
for misplaced items, you're going to be wasting time...causing lack of time for
your health. If you're constantly trying to dig through the clutter, you're not
going to be able to focus...and you're going to be frustrated. which causes
stress and lack of motivation in other areas of your life. Those who can reach
organizing goals in their homes, offices, and lives, tend to also have the
ability to reach healthy, happy living goals as well.
When it comes to organizing, most folks think of clutter, time management and
storage. I think of it as a more all-encompassing subject that reaches out into
all areas of our lives. When it comes to healthy living and the choices we make,
being organized is key.

In my book, the goal of 'losing weight' is weak and vague. While shedding some
pounds in and of itself may be a good thing to do...why would you focus on just
a small piece of the puzzle in the quest for a newer, more glorious you? You'd
be selling yourself short.
There's something even better you can be doing for yourself. You can actually
GLOW, which brings me to some very exciting news.
As you may already know, besides being an organizing expert...I am ALSO a
fitness expert. I teach six fitness classes each week at both my local YMCA and
the Senior/Community Center. I am a Certified Zumba Instructor, a certified
STRONG by Zumba Instructor AND a Certified POUND Fitness Instructor. Fitness is
pretty much my second life.
In addition to regular exercise, I also know how important it is to eat healthy,
nutritious foods. But, trust me...I don't starve or follow any crazy diet plan.
I eat fun foods like potato chips and chocolate now and then too!
I love to cook...although I don't have a ton of extra time to do so. That's why
I have to come up with recipes that are a cinch to make, don't include weird
ingredients, are nutritious and healthy, taste great and I can whip up quickly
and easily.
Plus, I love to feel good...look good...do whatever I can to better myself...
AND exude confidence in my life. In light of this...

Week Beginning July 29th
1. Is it time to change your air conditioner filter? Inspect your air
conditioner filter. Most need to be changed within one to three months. You'll
know it needs to be changed if it's visibly dusty, gray, and ashy-looking. Keep
it clean to ensure your cooling system is running efficiently and so dust
doesn't build up in your ducts...ending up in dust being blown into your home.
2. Sweep out your garage. Drive the car out of the garage and move
anything that's not anchored down. Then, sweep all the debris out, using a
dustpan to pick up and discard the dirt, pebbles, and other debris so it doesn't
get blown back into your garage. Clean up any oil stains or grease. Finally, you
may also wish to use your hose or power washer for a more thorough cleaning.
3. Donate a box of books, craft supplies, or kitchen items. Grab a
cardboard box or grocery bag and fill it with books, craft supplies and/or
kitchen items that are no longer useful in your life. Donate these to your
favorite charity...or someone you personally know who can use them.
4. Schedule a garage sale for late August or early September. My
13-year-old daughter actually teamed up with some of her friends and hosted a
multi-family garage sale a few weeks ago. The girls all did very well selling
their unwanted items. My daughter made over $350 alone...all on stuff that was
just gathering dust in her room. Not sure how to have a successful garage
sale? Get a copy of my
Garage Sale Toolkit
and learn everything you need to know.
5. Make the most of August. What can you do to make the month of August
extra special? Plan a family reunion? Get together with friends you knew in
college? Visit a new town? Host a block party with your neighbors? Take up a new
hobby? Make August count...think up something you'd really enjoy, and do it.
6. Be aware of watering needs. In some areas, it really tends to heat
up this time of the year. Keep an eye on plants and grass that may need extra
watering on the extra hot, non-rainy days.
The greatest miracle on Earth is the human body. It is stronger and wiser
than you may realize, and improving its ability to self heal is within your
control.
