How to Get Through Your Own Internal Solar Eclipse
Did you get to see the solar eclipse this past week? My Facebook feed was
packed with photos of this event. Some folks were thrilled that they captured
the eclipse beautifully, while others were bummed that the cloudy day in their
area prevented good viewing. If you missed it, you'll have to wait awhile for
the next opportunity in April of 2024.
So, what exactly is a solar eclipse? NASA explains, 'when the moon orbits Earth,
it moves between the sun and Earth. When this happens, the moon blocks the light
of the sun from reaching Earth. This causes an eclipse of the sun, or solar
eclipse. During a solar eclipse, the moon casts a shadow onto Earth.'
While a real solar eclipse is pretty cool, what about when our internal sunshine
suddenly has a shadow cast upon it? Everything could be going along just fine
and then all of a sudden, something occurs and our light goes out. Maybe you get
laid off at work. Perhaps you're going through a break-up or a divorce. Maybe
you or someone in the family is seriously ill, you have flooding in your home,
you've made a big mistake that has hurt someone you love, or you've just lost a
dear friend.
I opened my email a few days ago to learn that a colleague of mine was recently
in a terrible car accident. She's alive, but her recovery process will be long
and hard.
How, when your sunshine is blocked out, do you get out of the shadow and back
into the light?
1) Allow yourself to be temporarily emotional. Do you need to cry your
eyes out? Scream into a pillow? Pace and pout? It's OK. Close the door, and give
yourself 10 minutes to express whatever emotion you're feeling. Sometimes we
just have to let it out.
2) One is a lonely number. No matter how alone you may feel, you're not.
Perhaps nobody you know is going through this darkness, but someone, somewhere
in the world is...or maybe even something worse. Once you accept this, you may
be better able to remove any self-victimizing mindset you may be experiencing.
3) Don't bottle it up and put a cork in it. While you may not want to
talk about whatever you're going through, keeping it bottled up inside, stewing
within you, is like hanging out in a pressure cooker. Whether you express what
you're feeling to a spouse, a friend, or a professional, the sooner you begin
chatting about it, the faster you'll have the opportunity to release the
tension.
4) Allow your logic to take over and seek solutions. Are you able to
fix whatever the problem is? If so, grab a sheet of paper and a pen and begin
writing down possible rectifications...
Lost a job? Get your resume together. Are you interested in switching careers
completely? Maybe you have to work two jobs for awhile. Perhaps it's a good
time to visit an employment agency.
Going through a breakup or divorce? Maybe you can spend some time with a parent
or a good friend to help ease the heartache a bit. Perhaps you can go away on a
weekend alone to regroup. Another possibility is coming up with reasons why this
may actually be a good thing...less fighting, less heartache, and so on.
Alternately, maybe, just maybe, this relationship can be salvaged. If there are
any possibilities of that, those can be included in your list as well.
Damage to your home? Never fun...but fixable. Yes, it's going to cost money
that you may not have, and yes, it's a major inconvenience, and maybe you even
lost some possessions like old family photos. There's nothing you can do about
those things, but with time and work, it will get better, your old memories are
always in your heart, and there's time for new memories.
When you write down possible solutions, you've automatically put yourself on
a healing and productive path.
If there are no 'fixes' for what's going on, like saying goodbye to a dear
friend who is going through an end-stage illness, your solutions can then be
to write down things you can do to help your friend during this time of need,
and afterwards, what you can do to honor the memory of this person...and help
you get though your own grief.
5) Invite the light. No matter what you're going through, you're the
person who can remove the shadows and invite the light. While things may seen
like they're at the bottom of the barrel now and then, once you conjure up the
strength to accept what's happening, take a deep breath, and make the very best
you can under the circumstances. In turn, your shadows will begin unclouding all
that inner sunshine within you.
Even in a total eclipse, those rays aren't gone...they're right at the edges,
peaking out, waiting to burn bright once again.

Theme of the Week: School. Enjoy our home page quotes, that reflect our
theme, for added inspiration and motivation this week

Week Beginning August 26th
1. Inspect bath towels. Take a peek at your bath towels and beach towels.
Donate those that have seen better days. Tip: The Humane Society takes old
towels as donations. If you're short on towels, pick up a new set or two
this week.
2. Restock on Over-the-Counter Medication. Have a peek at your stash of
Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl, and any other over-the-counter medication in your
home, office, or purse. Safely dispose of any that are past their expiration
date. Replenish any you are short on so that when someone in your family needs
one of these remedies, you'll have them quickly and easily accessible.
3. Weed out one pantry shelf or kitchen cabinet. Choose one pantry shelf
or kitchen cabinet where you store foods that don't require refrigeration. Get
rid of anything that's too old to consume, is stale, or that you simply don't
like.
4. Clean out your a trash container or two. On garbage day, after your
trash has been picked up, bring your trash container into the driveway, put a
few drops of dishsoap in it, and hose it out. Wipe clean any spills or dried-on
food. Turn it upside down so all the water drains. After a while, turn it
right side up, and leave it outside in the sun to dry to completion before
bringing it back in the house.
5. Get rid of excess containers and baskets. Many folks buy containers
and baskets in the hopes of getting more organized, but if you have these and
are not using them, they actually become part of the clutter. Only keep
containers and baskets you have an immediate use for. Donate the rest.
Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.
